Nope. First time was easing down to the creek crossing that was covered in silt. IF it would have locked up I would have slid maybe 2 feet instead of the 10-12 I ended up rolling. Next time was making a turn onto another road. My driver's tire hit a reflective marker as I was turning and set off the ABS and it barely disengaged in time for me to avoid hitting the ditch. There's been multiple other incidents where the abs has kicked in too easily. And the abs is not even reliable. I've locked the tires up before on the highway when I was passing and saw a motorcycle in the oncoming lane. I guess maybe it senses if the tires are spinning at differant speeds or something....

ABS has no place on a 4x4.

So without flaming me or calling me stupid, can somebody explain why you don't like ABS and how it doesn't work in snow or how it could put you into a ditch? Also, why is the tacoma's ABS any different from any other cars?

I'm not trying to be an a-hole, just trying to understand the ABS hate here.

When the ABS engages on snow , it increases your stopping distance

ABS was made to make crappy drivers less likely to spin out(paraphrasing a manual I read). A good driver can apply brakes properly to stop and maintain control. There are some times when ABS will save you, but most of the time it has almost wrecked me.

While climbing a hill at shoecreek, I couldn't get up a wet rock. I hit the brakes to stop from rolling backwards. ABS kicked in, and I proceeded to roll backwards. If it weren't for a dirt mound, I would have hit the guy behind me, or the tree behind the dirt mound. He wasn't following too close.
I pull the ABS fuse when I wheel. I can normally brake to not engage the ABS on the road. On trail is a different story.

When abs kicks in, it pulses the brakes and backs them off a little bit to allow the wheel to continue to spin, thus allowing you to maintain directional control of your truck. They say a skidding tire has lost all control, there for you can't turn, or change direction at all when a tire is in a skid.

I've only had one issue, that I believe was the ABS engaging. I was coming up to a red light, dry roads, great conditions, hit the brakes to start slowing down and as I was starting to come to a stop, bam! no brakes... what so ever and sailed through the luckily clear intersection. I wasn't even going that fast or braking hard or anything when the brakes just went out. They worked just fine after that and have continued to work just fine. Haven't played with them much on ice yet, but they seem to function fine when I have been sliding in gravel and stuff though.

I think most people that have "Problems" are driving too fast for the conditions and a few might have real problems with the ABS system.

They just try to blame the ABS as the problem when it is them.

I have about 12 years in ABS cars/trucks and have never had problems when driving responsibly and within what the conditions limit. And I go out driving in snow storms for no reason other than to drive in the snow. And I go off road a lot.

Personally I think the ABS worked great in my old 2006 2wd and my 2012 4x4.

Well, so far nobody's convinced me the abs system in our tacoma's is any different from any other system, and I've never seen anybody complain about it on other vehicle forums. I know it's bad for off road, most dual sport bikes with abs have an off switch that you can choose to turn it off and even the cheaper bikes have ways to temp. disable it. I guess I'll just keep driving on road with my dangerous abs engaged and hope I don't crash.

No one is convincing you to do this mod

I actually prefer not to have ABS engage when I'm driving in the wet coastal snow we get here , due to the fact that ABS most definitely INCREASES stopping distances on snow

" ABS generally offers improved vehicle control and decreases stopping distances on dry and slippery surfaces for many drivers; however, on loose surfaces like gravel or snow-covered pavement, ABS can significantly increase braking distance, although still improving vehicle control.[1] "

    Oh boy...
Tried it before with just the VSC button... the second you start to slip sideways or go faster than i think 5 mph or something to that nature, your LSD (thanks to abs) slows you down. at least that was my experience. Now all bets are off. Only thing i need to turn off now is that pesky engine limiter when you stomp ur breaks.

for some reason these trucks unlike any predecessor before can-not just sit and melt-tires. Just like i told the guy at the service center at Toyota, "these trucks were made to be way to safe. Safe just isn't that fun." Its a truck not a family sedan...

You pushed the VSC button or held it in for 5 seconds ?

I think you just pushed it in once, which keeps VSC on, and turns off auto LSD. Holding it for 5 seconds will shut off all traction control systems.

I can roast my tires all day. I've done brake stands in mud for 10 seconds before, no problems.

Was ABS very common in the 80's and lower 90's?

Hell even my 2000 TJ did not have ABS.

Wouldn't surprise me if I have been driving longer than you?

I can definately see how ABS can be deterimental to stopping on loose surfaces.

With all the black box monitoring on the newer trucks, I wonder if these kind of mods throw flags and subject us to liablity in the event of a crash?

ABS is not mandatory on light vehicles in North America , no ?
