I'll bet it has to do with the runaway prius recall. A lot of xrunner guys had issues heating up their tires because if you are pushing the throttle then hit the brake the computer shuts off the throttle. In an auto we push on the brake first then the throttle so we don't trigger that safety feature.

Look into the 90L recall. Most 2010's and up come with it right out of the factory.

Damn that makes a lot of sense. However, even my little brothers 09 taco 5 speed has the same issue. When did that runaway prius deal happen? Also has anyone else experienced this, or hasnt had this problem? If so what year is ur truck?

Edit: --- Oh and i looked up the 90L and all i could find was just the peddle trim and shim.... that is about it. no public admittance of a software change.

Mine is an 05 and has had the recall done to it. Unless your brother or the previous owner signed the waiver form to refuse the recall it has probably been done unless the tacoma just hasn't been back to the dealership since it was bought new.

He took it in for the recall but he stood there and watched the Toyota Tech guy the whole time. all the guy did was cut the peddle and he left after 5 or 10 minutes. And the truck never drove different. He is pretty damn hard on it so i know he would have noticed right away.

U have the standard tranny too yeah? Im sure there has to be away to get rid of this engine/break limiter.

They should have reprogrammed the ECU with the mod. Realistically the only time you should notice the mod is if your throttle were to stick while driving.

I tested mine once. I found a wide open road, was doing about 30mph and put the throttle to the floor then pushed the brake just a little. The throttle shut off really quickly and I pretty much started coasting even though I was holding the throttle to the floor.

I can't remember if there is a speed at which this engages, I imagine there isn't. Try this, leave it in neutral and rev the engine to 3K-4K and hold it there and then push on the brake and see if it drops to idle while holding the brake and throttle.

Then try holding just the brake and then rev the throttle and see if it revs. I think it will and this is why autos can burnout and manuals can't with this safety feature. I have an auto and can't definitely powerbrake it. I'll have to try revving it up and then hitting the brake and see what happens though.

Try searching for 90L recall bypass on here or xr-underground. Pretty sure someone found a way to bypass it but can't remember how.

So I just tried using the brake and throttle in both park and neutral and couldn't trigger the recall, so maybe there is some sort of movement needed or at least a detection of whether or not the tranny is in gear (for the autos, not sure if manuals actually detect whether the vehicle is in gear or not). So I don;t know if you will experience the same results as me or not. If so that was a useless test... haha

Yea i just left the island where my truck is so ill have to test that when i get back. Im going to look up the bypass for the recall while im at it. Its annoying and im over it. I know our trucks have the power... just the other day i flipped the abs killswitch going up a hill and i :burnrubber: killed it up the whole thing second gear.

Wow... Does the MafCal really help that much or is it cuz you are a manaul? I am running skinny 33" tires and have 4.88 gears in the diffs and even powerbrake launching on pavement I barely even chirp the tires once. Yeah I can stand on the brakes and light both rear tires up with the locker engaged all day long, but most vehicles can do that. haha And it looks like you are running bigger tires than I am. haha

Here you go, found this over on XR-U:

    thanks for the thread link!

and nah man i can only roast tires like that on my stocks or on a wet day with my 35s. i have two sets of tires i go between. My stocks are the 31's. but yeah that MAF calibrator gives you more action because it reprograms your fuel maps on ur ECU but i also have a clutch i can pop which makes a BIIIG difference.

Edit: and sorry but automatics are just rubbish if you really want to drive like an a-hole hahaha

Define drive like an asshole? haha

I have a manual car and enjoy driving manual but modern auto tranny's are just so much better than the auto tranny's of the last couple decades. That's part of why they are taking over. Hell the 5 spd auto tranny I have came off of a V8 engine and the only ones I have heard of dying were from user error basically (screwing up the tranny fluid or towing over capacity). Yet our V6's are tearing up clutches and synchros on the 6spd manuals all the time... I just haven't heard much good about the 6spds.

Yeah my clutch is definitely not what it was haha. (thats my definition of being an a-hole, to spare the graphic nature of getting a clutch to less than desirable.) but hell its a stock clutch and clutches can be replaced. :yay:

But for where im from, a standard tranny is better because of all the sand we park on, drive on, digourselvesout of, kill, and etc. At least in my opinion. Hell i know the manual tranny isn't everyone's thing but for me, its my cup-o-tea. Auto trannys piss me off, they like to downshift when i dont want them too or vice versa.

My clutch may have been burnt a few times :burnrubber: when drivin like a d-bag but hey i can still take off up a hill just by using the clutch with no gas so i have to say the v6 has a pretty damn good clutch. Now for the 4banger taco i have the same love but i definitely know that the way they ride with the manual is not as good as the v6 in my opinion. I would know only because my little bro has the 4banga 5speed.

to get back on topic tho...... i NEED to get rid of that damn engine limiter :burnrubber:

Can't get this mod to work, anybody else have issues?

Maybe it is the switch I am using? It is an ottratw SPST switch but it has a ground on it because it has a light in it. I have also tried just disconnecting the wire without luck.

When I went to radio shack they had DPST switches but they all had six poles on the back, I am confused as to what kind of switch that I need?

Use the one with two poles on the back....all your doing is cutting the wire....the running both ends to the switch. ..completing the circuit

With either type of switch, what I am currently getting is ABS and E-Brake always on. The switch is controlling whether or not the e-locker light comes on.

Om this mod, you need three poles, one has to supply power (center one), one has to go back to the original wiring, and the other has to be grounded (signaling a locked rear diff)

The off road packages use a little bit different wiring, there are a few threads about disabling the abs on an o/r package
