the ubolts are essentially an additional clamp

when the leafs bend they slide along the entire length against each other, however slightly they still slide (bookleaf style) except directly at the centering pin. even 1/4 inch away from the pin there is some slide, very tiny amount....

and if you tighten the bejeesus out of the ubolts the springs will slide against each other less, due to friction, making the whole assembly a bit stiffer. it ain't much stiffer but it is stiffer

How did I speak to toyota california ? before I got a TSB done I spent time riding around in 2013 and 2014 tacomas with the shop foreman at a large dealership who wanted to know more from toyota California before he does my TSB, so we set up a webex meeting (dial-in) and we three spoke about everything on the new TSB and I brought up the low 37ft and 44ft lbs ubolts. The engineer said it is a non-issue and meant to be that way. He also said regarding the new TSB reports are coming back from the field that it is fixing some vehicles so that was the go-ahead to do mine. and ....that is the story

I'm pretty sure chris4x4 called/emailed Toyota corporate and they told him it was a typo, I will find the post I read that on.

would like to see this, as all current docs are the oddly low-ass number
I go to techinfo and can clearly see myself the gen1 settings are 'normal' (very tight) and gen2 suddenly low

maybe it has to do with springs snapping in half from old-age ?

anyhow stock still shows 37...and TSB 0008-14 shows 44ft lbs

    Holy cow, great thread, thanks!

Rear u-bolts are really 37 ft/lbs? dang, that seems like not much.
I think the Land Cruiser spec is more like 65ft/lbs?

I was looking for wheel to vehicle toruqes and see 83 ft/lbs, but see not spec quoted for alloy vs steel wheels? Is that right?

alloy 83 is correct and that is fine for steel too

as a general rule for light duty trucks and cars 80 is where to set lug nuts
    steel or alloy...
then re-check after a tank of gas or so....

Just a reminder to everyone...if you don't want to scroll through the whole OP, there is a LINK at the top to download a .PDF version that has a Table of Contents to quickly navigate to the section you need. Just make sure you download it rather than viewing it in Google Docs.

Did you ever find out if the 37 lbs for the u bolts were correct?

Even if it wasn't a typo and even if it is a typo I would still put 80 lbs on the u-bolt nuts. 37 ft lbs is rediculous.

I put 90 or 100...can't remember. My dakars started squeaking so I decided to find the torque specs since I didn't have them the day I installed.
