Thieves Nationwide Are Slithering Under Cars, Swiping Catalytic Converters
    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/09/climate/catalytic-converter-theft.html

From about $500 an ounce five years ago, the price of palladium quintupled to hit a record of $2,875 an ounce last year, and is now hovering between $2,000 and $2,500 an ounce, above the price of gold. Rhodium prices have skyrocketed more than 3,000 percent from about $640 an ounce five years ago to a record $21,900 an ounce this year, roughly 12 times the price of gold.

Online, ads abound of scrapyards willing to pay quick cash for catalytic converters. One site advertised payouts of up to $500 for certain foreign models. Older foreign models tend to contain more of the precious metals than newer ones.

Toyota Prius converters also fetch a higher price because their gasoline engines aren’t in as much use, and so it can take longer for the car to burn out the precious metals.

Some Toyota owners, in fact, are demanding that the automaker add anti-theft protections like metal shields to converters to make stealing them more difficult.

Ed Hellwig, a spokesman for Toyota, called catalytic converter theft “an industry-wide challenge” and said the Prius was no more at risk than any other vehicle. He urged owners to “follow the basics to protect their vehicles,” including parking in well-lit areas.

I just replaced a catalytic converter of a Ford Focus. Nobody wants to go through that, definitely not worth steeling.

Right up there with identity theft and scamming old people. I would be pleased to beat one of these MFr's with a sock full of nickels.

Left/Right/Center, idk I think this would be a nice agenda we could all get on board with.

I too have noticed an uptick of cat theft in my area. Early this morning a Prius just a few blocks away got hit! Here's a link to their Ring video: https://neighbors.ring.com/n/82OLl019LO Motivated me to finally clear out the bay in my garage so I can pull the tuck in at night. Man, I hate thieves!

I would vote for and even throw in a few bucks to pay for doing it like the Romans:

Link here: LacusCurtius • Roman Laws about Theft (Smith's Dictionary ...penelope.uchicago.edu › Texts › secondary › Furtum

^Long read... my favorite part below:
The strictness of the old law in the case of actions of theft was gradually modified, as already shown. By the law of the Twelve Tables, if theft (furtum) was committed in the night, the thief, if caught in the act, might be killed: and he might also be killed in the daytime, it he was caught in the act and defended himself with any kind of a weapon (telum); if did not so defend himself, he was whipped and became addictus, if a freeman (as above stated) and if a slave, he was whipped and thrown down a precipice. ["precipice" is a steep cliff LOL]

Makes me wonder if cat thefts have created a feedback loop in the cost of these precious metals.
Initial thefts increase demand for replacement cats, which increases demand for the metals to manufacture them, which leads to higher metal prices, which encourages more cat thefts.

edit: found another article that says the spike in the price is due to countries (China most notably) starting to require pollution control devices on cars, so demand for cats has increased globally.

I've already dealt with that situation before I can get hit. They've been stealing them out of our parking lot at work. Well, they won't get mine!!
Bought the truck on March 13, and on March 14, right after I debadged it, this happened. I bought this URD y-pipe while I was waiting on my truck to be built.
By the way, the truck only has 44 miles on it. Catless Midpipe Install (1).jpg Catless Midpipe Install (2).jpg Catless Midpipe Install (4).jpg Catless Midpipe Install (5).jpg

Both sides got grabbed today. Are there two per side, four total? Trying to figure out what I need to order and it looks like there's a cat right off each manifold, then another downstream (which is what they got).
