I was going to get some arctic silver 5 cause it seems its been getting decent reviews, but I found a few threads on toher forums that give it an okay performance. I ordered a samsung 850 evo ssd, figured i'd kill 3 birds with one stone. ssd, re-apply thermal paste to cpu/gpu.

What is a good decently priced thermal paste?

Dell latitude e6400d, intel dual core t9600, 2,80 ghz, copper heat sink.

    Are these normal temps?

Under load, normal surfing and youtube.

Yep those are normal temps, most intel cpu's usually underclock when they hit 90C or so. I use arctic silver, it's good stuff, after you apply it you might see some slightly higher temps until the paste "breaks in" but thats completely normal.

    Those are not normal temps.

I think you're confused, those are in Celsius, not Fahrenheit.

I know they are in C, and if it was in F why would I even question it, those would be equal to or lower than ambient temps. I ended up re-pasting my laptop cause I put in a new SSD. My temps are lower by about 10 degrees, not sure if it makes a difference but it did drop.

I've had my comp on all day. Been surfing and doing the usual. I just took this screen shot, my fan barley even kicks on now.

Over clocked/volted i7 4770K weighing in at 30*C. My laptop is some Celeron and it doesn't go much past that temp either. Those Core 2 Duos were supposed to run cooler than the old P4's they replaced, you guys are running hot. Real hot. That wouldn't be an acceptable processor temp on a stock cooler for any desktop/server equipment. Period.

Your first reply stated that I am mistaking the Celsius readings as Fahrenheit. If thought my laptop was running at 70-75F, which would be equal to ambient temps, why would I question my temps? Your first reply makes no sense.

I'm not running a gaming rig and from the readings I've done, my temps are normal for the device I am using. Can I get them lower? Yes, I can, but I don't want to go through the hassle of replacing my thermal pads with copper shims, I don't game, or do any kind of media editing so I do not need anything that runs as cool as possible.

I used the Arctic Silver 5 in my April 2014 build. No issues whatsoever.

I used arctic mx-4, it got good reviews and it's working out pretty well.

I think that was the alternative I was considering, but the Silver 5 I was able to receive for free from a friend. Hard to beat that.

Yeah, free is the best price. I was going to go with Silver 5 in the beginning but the Mx-4 did slightly better in the test I found, the difference is negligible though.

Quality application of the paste, giving 100% coverage in a thin layer meant to fill in the micro scratches of the two mating surfaces will have the greatest impact. All paste will still have a thermal conductivity less than that of metal to metal contact. It is not unusual to find from the factory applied paste as a 'dollop' in the middle', no even coverage, and too thick in the middle leaving just a small area of surface contact that actually can transfer heat.

When I opened up my laptop, you described it perfectly. There was an issue I believe with Dell using either really cheap thermal paste on these laptops or laptops built around the time this was. It was just a poor job altogether. There are plenty of articles and forums posts that people have posted regarding it.

In order for me to get my laptop down to 30*C, I would have to do this. Maybe in the near future, but for now, the new paste will be just fine for me.
