A couple of nights ago at 2am my neighbor heard a car pull up to the curb, looked out her window and saw two guys walking around my truck. She told them she already called the cops and to leave. They proceeded to get into a white SUV and split. Multiple cameras on multiple house caught it all.

    my questions are:
    1) if I turn off the fob every time then they can’t spoof it, right? Even if they sat a couple of houses down while I push the lock button AND THEN push unlock twice? Seems there’s a split second where compromise can happen. Could they come back later with the code and unlock?
    2) how long does an ODBII spoof take assuming they bust an alarmed truck window?
    3) i have cat shields so they can eat the corn kernels from my sheit! Shell on the back, pop and lock installed as is a Sabellco tailgate protector.

    Any help appreciated.

if you deactivate the fob, it is no longer transmitting its security code, so they can’t use a device to copy its signal. You can test this by walking up to your truck with the fob active and the interior lights turn on, but when you deactivate the fob, the truck does nothing.

I got a harbor freight driveway monitor and put a magnet on the back of the IR unit, and stick it on the side of my truck at night when I have to park on the street. It’ll go off in my bedroom if anybody’s walking around the truck. If you do this, be sure to put it around waist or even chest height otherwise cats will set it off.

There’s a post I started here about the glass break sensor, you might check that out as well.

You get the biggest chain and biggest dog collar you can find.

Put the collar on the chain. Wrap the chain around a tree then put up a sign that says Beware of Dog.

Also maybe put up a sign in your yard or wherever nearby that says “smile while you’re on camera”

If they want they’re gonna take it. Fob off or on. FYI the fob is never really off so it can still be cloned.

If I was concerned in the past I would pull the fuel pump relay. Not perfect but whatever.

No, it’s not transmitting anything when you turn it off, it’s the same effect of pulling out the battery. In fact, for long-term storage of your spare fob, turning it off keeps it from draining the battery

Turning it off is the same thing as putting it in a little baggie. Probably better if the bag is defective. But then some people are forgetful and wouldn’t remember to turn it off each night.

Putting it in a microwave might work also, but then knowing me, I’d forget and cook it the following morning when I’m warming up my breakfast!

Some dash cams have 24 hour monitor function. Won't help if they take the whole vehicle but if they are taking the cat it may help. There are also aftermarket GPS tracker$.

I’m not concerned with them towing it. Its doable but off street. Some good suggestions, thanks.

So nothing to worry about except glass breakage or towing, right?

You can always buy what is called a "Faraday bag" to place the key fob inside. Such a bag has a metallic liner that blocks the signal between your truck and the key fob. When shopping, place the key fob in the bag and lock the doors manually with the lock button on the door. But whatever you do don't lock the doors with the bag and key fob inside your truck :D

You can still read the microchip with no battery in the fob. However the range is significantly decreased. This is how you can also start your truck with a dead fob by holding it to the push button (receiver coil)

Same with how your CC info can be stolen just by someone being close enough to your wallet picking up the microchip

They dont actually stop transmitting the fob is always putting out a signal. When you turn it “off” from my understanding and everything I’ve read it tells the car to not do anything with the signal when pressed but the fob is still transmitting. Kinda like your cell phone when they’re powered down they not actually off.

faraday bags block all transmission...whether you turn the thing off or not.

Decreased to the point of needing physical access to the key to do anything with the signal. The concern here is thieves picking up the already weak and short-range signal, while the fob is on.
Turning it off and setting it anywhere inside your house besides right by your front door is already more than enough to prevent this kind of extremely uncommon and advanced attack.

This comment isn’t necessarily directed solely at you. Mostly just venting since this thread is already bordering on tinfoil hat territory…
