I have an 09 Tacoma SR5, V6, 4x4 with access cab and towing package. The Jayco is 2580lbs, with a GVWR of 3500lbs. Dry hitch weight of 350lbs. Unfortuntely I don't have the 7 pin connector for the trailer brakes, only the 4 pin (which I have to replace since it was corroded).

So, A) I'm assuming that this towing this is ok since the the Tacoma is rated for towing up to 6500lbs. and B) can I get away with not having a brake controller just to take it home from the point of sale, which is roughly 20 miles away? The road going home is a country road and pretty flat.

Is there anything else anyone can suggest to get, such as trailer mirrors, weight distribution hitch, etc.?

I would not want to tow that kind of weight without brakes even a short distance and depending on your state I'm pretty sure it's not legal so if you get in a crash, even if it's not your fault you may be held liable. Can you borrow a truck with a brake controller just to get it home? And if you have the towing package, on an 09 you should have a factory harness with the 7 way plug. Why do you only have a flat 4? Tow mirrors are a very good idea and also probably needed for compliance with the law.

If you don't have the 7 pin you don't have the towing package (unless the 7 pin was broken off and replaced with a 4 pin which wouldn't make any sense).

You're going to want a brake controller, a WD hitch, and towing mirrors. You should also confirm that you do in fact have the towing package, if not the towing limit is 3,500lbs.

Your truck can do it and you won't even crash if you don't have to stop fast. I've done it not legally with a 1999 4-cylinder.

Don't forget tranny cooler if you've got an auto. I'd say airbags or beefier rear springs as well. (I've added both to mine which does have the tow package)

Look up the state requirements for towing trailers in that weight. You may need trailer brakes to be legal towing it home
