Yeah possibly true. Also depends on the bike. I had a 97 cr250 with an almost violent low/midrange hit (powerband) that would launch out of a 2nd gear rutted hairpin turn and it was assholes and elbows and look out.....I went to an 04 however that was just smmooooth throughout the rpm range and was a lot like a 4 stroke. Very predictable and easy to ride in many conditions from mx to tight woods trails a great bike.
If you're gonna be dabbling with any sort of mx type riding everything has to be dialed and in the right gear and more precise on a 125 to clear doubles and table tops and hammer thru whoops, but on a 250 the same power that can get ya in trouble can save your ass as well. You can be in the wrong gear either way for a particular section and pull it out unscathed.
Very few riders will ever ride a 250 2stroke to its full potential, but the right rig is so sweet.

I hear you on the CR's, when they went to case reed and electric power valves they ruined it IMO, yeah it's smooth but slow. A YZ is smooth and fast.:)

Perhaps, but I'll take Honda reliability. Never liked Yamadogs but had a couple great Wobblsakis and Slowzukis.

    haha nice

FWIW I abused my old 2002 KX125 like crazy, put well over 100 hours on one top end, overheated it BAD once, and it never let me down.

My Sherco is an 08. Ive had it for a little over a year and I can guarantee I've put well over 100 hours while I've owned it. Im the third owner and know its never been rebuilt. Maintenance maintenance maintenance. Keep the oil changed and the air filter clean and it'll last a long time

LS1-T56 swap, Z06 ported heads, cam, Titanium valves, Kevlar clutch. Now building a forged stroker (383) and all the ponies! Old setup was rod-knockin on heaven's door...
Yamaha's reliability is the same as the comparable Honda, both VERY similar, it comes down to maintenance or lack thereof.

I have Hondas and Yamahas and the Honda is less reliable than the Yamaha since it ate valves extremely fast, my Yamaha would go virtually double the hours on the valves all things being equal, and the Yamaha was a 250F which I rode like I stole it and the Honda is a CRF488R and it guess through parts much faster, maybe because I ride it like its a 125, lol..

But seriously reliability shouldnt be an issue with a newer rider if maint. is kept up on. One bike isnt going to be way more reliable than the other unless you comparing 2 very different bikes IE: air cooled vs water cooled 4 strokes or 4 stroke vs. 2 stroke.

CRF-X or WR, best options for the OP without a doubt..they have plenty of power, the have milder cams for more linear power, softer trail style suspension and not hard as a rock supercross suspension, wider gear ratio, electric start (on most models), and when you want more power you can swap out the cam and do the CCC (closed circuit competition mod) which requires jetting, unrestricting the exhaust and opening up the restrictive airbox! Once this is done the bike really wakes up! So once you get used to the power stock you can just do that for about a 20% gain in power, those bikes mentioned are very restrictive and extremely lean (jetting) stock in order to pass a "green sticker" emissions test..

These bikes can grow with you and can be hopped up to be as fast as the motocross version is with modification, anyway good luck and if you have any questions just him me up via PM, I know a lot about bikes and can help you with your decision if you have any questions about anything..

didn't know that, thanks for the correction.

All I know is every 2002 + Cr I've ridden has been a dog till you get on the pipe.

Wait....what are these mysterious valves of which u speak?
Oh yeah, a four stroke thang.....LOL
never did get used to mx machines sounding like a bunch of souped up lawn mowers.
Yeah ya gotta rebuild top ends a little more frequently on 2strokes, but it's cheap and easy/simple. Used to take me 45 minutes to put in a new piston and ring.
Oh well, I guess it's whatever you were raised on.
    I'd love to own a crf450x;)
