I did the Jeep thing for years. Enjoyed it but it was expensive.....repairs were required quite often.

love jeeps, owned a few of them and my buddy owns a dealership. the reason why i ultimately won't buy another one (atm anyway) is they're highly unreliable compared to Toyota, and there's nothing worse than breaking down in the middle of nowhere.

Out of two XJ's only once did I get stranded. The starter died at hotel parking lot. $150 for the starter and $50 to the dude that installed it right at the hotel. I guess the fact that I had to stay AT the hotel was an added expense, but hey at least it was in Pensacola.

    My XJ's were DEAD reliable.

The only time my YJ broke was when I sidestepped the clutch at 4000 rpms with a load of people in it and the output shaft broke off the transfer case ( I was young and stupid). Still got me home, but in front wheel drive. Never gave me any trouble in 100,000+ miles.

mine had 196,000 miles and never left me stranded. i blew a u-joint going down the highway, pulled the rear drive shaft and drofe and hour and half home in front wheel drive. i put that thing through hell and it kept going.

but, for the chance that it may break, i'm keeping my tacoma and my next project may eventually be something i tow to the trails. i'm not sure how far i want to take it.

Well if your already thinking about towing a trail rig to the trail, might as well go all out as it seems that way already lol

That he did. Now he needs to get it up on Mikestands and get the build underway.

dont have any pics here at work...but its a 1990 cherokee limited auto speedo is not correct(plus has rebuilt motor)

$500 bucks and its yours, I bought it for 500 and then added/bought stuff below

The rear breaks need fixing, i have two new drums, spring kits, shoes, and hubs i believe (all parts are brand new from auto parts warehouse)

I replaced the master brake cylinder already, the front pads/rotors are like new just oxidized from sitting.

The guy i bought it from had the motor rebuilt roughly 2000 miles before i picked it up (he bought a dodge ram 3500 and got too busy with work to wheel)

swapped the front power seats out for 2 manual seats (not the same color but they work.

Steering column is cracked (wheel wobbles) but i have a spare steering column to go with it.

Its lifted prob about 5-6 inches. Had 35s on it when i bought it but they were dry rotted. Picked up two new wrangler mtrs that are 33s, and then i had picked up two other 33s from my buddy.

The exhaust needs work. The guy cut it off halfway down the pipe (before the axle)

the back seat (is rusted out in a spot) had a buddy cut me out a floor of another cherokee so that comes with it as well.

I have thrown a battery in it and it starts up and runs STRONG. I just dont have time to get stuff done and i dont have the space anymore. Had to move back in with the parents,

It is definately a wheeling truck...thats why i bought it while i was still in school but between money and time now that im graduated with a full time job...the time is just not there, im working 6 days a week at an accounting firm so yea....i go in when its dark...and get home when its dark and go to bed...then repeat.

oh and the taco pulls it just fine!

well, with that price, it's worth getting some pics. post them up when you get a chance. most of the things you listed i've had to fix on my old jeep. they're all pretty simple fixes.

edit: i bet it's an automatic, huh? 4.0 liter?

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Jeeps are great 4x4s hands down, I have a 80 CJ5 myself and have been a lot of places with it, it has the big AMC six under the hood and that is a torque laden monster! In 4lo it will climb just about anything. Only thing I hate about it was the Just Empty Every Pocket aspect of it, idk how much I have spent on repairs in that thing, seems like I would be working on it every other weekend. But I still love the little things, they are a total blast to drive and there is nothing like going no top or doors on a nice summer day!
