Buy a trailer that has nice brakes, and get yourself a nice brake controller.

That'll make a HUGE difference compared to an additional 40 TQ

I would think that at your advanced age , you'd be settled in your ways & mature enough to stay with the 1st gen Tacomas , let the kids have the 2nd gens.
They're safer for them to play with because they're made of plastic !!!...j/k :D:D

Second gens like to visit and stay in the shop.:D

"I'm not planning on buying a really big trailer. But, I dont want a tent trailer either. I'm guessing it will be around 3000~4000 lbs. I know my truck is rated for more than that but I dont want to be close to the max either. I want to be able to easily tow it across country if needed."

You will need a real truck and not a Toy to easily pull 4k+ lbs across country. I'd get a Dodge Cummings rig and quit fooling around.

Just keep in mind the 2nd gens are built in America. This in my opinion is a negative.

    back to bone stock.
i say keep the old truck. sounds like a solid rig.

buy a great tent, and a great camping cot. i read somewhere that most people rarely use their camper trailers as much as they imagined. i would rent an RV for the occasional big event. that great truck of yours, you drive every day..keep it.

Parts are largely Japanese though from what I recall. My 2nd gen was a pile of shit. Plastic clutch assembly?? What a 'tough' truck.

I have to agree with you. That is the perfect truck (in my opinion) with the possible exception of color .

I have 15K in my pocket. I can catch a flight down tonight if your ready to deal. :D That would make for a nice little weekend drive back to Seattle.

If I am going to tow something for much distance, I want to be comfortable. Right now I am only towing a few thousand pound boat. It does OK, but you definitely know something is back there. Very sluggish and crappy braking. I have owned a 3.4, but never towed with it. Wouldn't even think about it.

I did have an 07 Tundra that I bought to tow a car hauler. With the car hauler, you knew it was there, but it was very stable and still had alot of power, and was still well within the 10,400lb weight limit. With the three thousand pound boat, you honestly would forget it was even there.

I say get something that will tow anything you will ever want to tow. I think you should find the exact RV you want, and then buy a truck that is easily capable of towing it. It you buy an RV because that is what your truck can tow, you won't be happy and end up getting rid of both of them and getting what you really wanted in the first place.

You probably wont get more than $15000 for your first gen.

Not sure if you want to buy new, but if you do, expect to pay at least $30k +TTL.

So now you have to come up with over $15000 for the new truck that can tow just a little bit more than your first gen.

Or you could get a used fullsize for the same price that will be much more enjoyable to tow with.

Thanks everyone for the input. I truely appriciate it, lots of good comments and a couple strange ones... ha..ha..

We kind of have a trailer picked out and I think it comes in at about 2500lbs empty. So maybe it won't be to bad. We'll just give it a try with our truck before we decide on buying a 2nd gen or even a larger truck as some suggested. We are buying the trailer used at a fair price so if we decide we don't like the small size we can just sell it again down the road and go from there.
