    I've been surprised the 4Runner's kept its current engine even with the 3.5L's been out for a while now. I could see them going to that for the next refresh, but I HIGHLY doubt a V8 will be considered. They've already got a V8 SUV. Putting one in the 4Runner will serve no purpose. Now, how much Toyota is buying into hybrid tech, I could see them going that route.
