Outcome is very graphic; I hope I have permission to post for the sake of education. Don't be that guy, swallow your pride and always opt for a strap. But holy Jesus of Nazareth - dude took it to the face real good. I've seen casualties (wounds) from war that look like a dramatized life alert commercial compared to this...

Mods: if at your discretion is too graphic feel free to edit and/or remove. Just wanted to share this. For those without Facebook:

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
I know a few people that need to see this. They take the attitude that steel is real. The other thing that was missed here is using something to weight the strap (or I guess chain) down.

I was watching videos on winching with a hi-lift and they were using chain. Seemed like a real bad idea to me, this definitely confirms that

Exactly. I was thinking using that much chain there was too much slack as it was. It was bound to snap.
    Can't fix stupid!

Actually, that may have been the intended purpose of something like a chain, when you don't want it to stretch like a strap, depending on how they were using it. Shock loading a chain is a surefire way to take a metal slingshot to the mouth.

This was posted on T4R.org a few years ago - The hospital scene was edited and added to that video and not part of the original.

The driver of the chain incident died instantly.

I was surprised he was still conscious and moving around and adjusting himself on the medical table.
Whoever hasn't seen it yet his left side of his face/cheek is basically open.

You are comparing apples to oranges (static load vs. dynamic load).

Using a chain with the hi-lift style "winch" is perfectly acceptable (ask the Hi-Lift folks). When you're using the hi-lift, the load builds *extremely* slowly (enough that it is considered a static load), so if it does fail, there's no inertia for the chain to go whipping around. Plus, at least with the Hi-Lift off-road "kit", the tree saver is the weak link in the system. People complain about the tree saver in that kit being too weak, but that's actually on purpose. If anything were to fail, it'd presumably be the thing farthest from you.

Obviously, you should still dampen the chain/strap with something, and it helps to take a minute, think about what you're doing, and not be stupid.
