Got the "TuneIt" app to work. Settings as usual were the culprit. It was set up to work with iOS, I had to change it to work with my Nexus 5. The pro tune I downloaded from Alpine, tweeters were way to bright, not to my liking at all. So I went and applied the tune I made before I got the deck, and it's better, but I got some tweaking to do. Gonna wait until after I get the Hertz speakers in, then I'll take my time tuning for the best overall sound. Speaking of which, the rain stopped, so the Hertz go in today.

So, I'll just leave these here.

Almost a shame to cover them with a door card. They are beautiful.

Thanks. I've tried playing with the tune, but can't get it where I want it. Then I decided to put a flat EQ on the deck, just so I can get used to the new sound. They sound great flat, tuning to improve will be hard. I have to wait on Amazon to receive my Y-adapters, so I can bridge the PDX-F4, because it sounds like they are begging for more power. Crutchfield is shipping me some rear speaker adapters, and I'm going to run the rear speakers off the deck, then bridge the amp and give the fronts 200w. I think that will improve them even more. Can't wait.

All great ideas. That's what I would do.

Consider taking some time to build your sail panels into tweeter mount locations. I'll probably be re-doing mine pretty soon, so I can make a write up on the best way to do it. It's a huge improvement over the factory location.

^^Now THAT'S a killer setup. I'd love to have that much fabrication skill. I've fiberglassed boxes before, but never anything to that extreme. Must sound amazing.

It's the best sounding system I've ever heard! Any type of song sounds amazing. I can't wait for it to be finished again

How are the Hertz tweeters? I've had Infinity and Alpine components in the past and the tweeters were too bright; especially the Infinities. Even at the -2db setting they were still too much for my tastes. I'm assuming the Hertz tweeters are better, but you did mention they were pretty bright initially. With the EQ flat, are they still pretty bright? I've listened to those speakers at a store so I know they sound good. But I was in a large room, not in a small demo room or a car. Thanks, and congrats on an amazing system. [IMG]

The Hertz tweeters were bright because I tried a tune in the stereo from Alpine. The mids were boosted, the bass was cut, and the highs were very bright. I have the tweeters connected on the -2db setting on the x-over, and with a flat tune, they are just right. Smooth and detailed. I'm glad I was talked into this set, instead of the HSK165 4's. The tweeters are nicer in the XL set, being soft domed. But the detail is there for sure. I can hear the top-hat cymbal or the crashing of all the cymbals in Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir", and the guitar in Van Halen's "Eruption" are so much more detailed, it's amazing. I definitely recommend the HSK165XL setup over the HSK165 4's.

So far, after playing with it for a week, this is the nicest tune I have, for the smoothest sound from all the speakers I have now. I'm running 200w to the Hertz speakers, and running the rear speakers off the deck.

does the crossover allow you to adjust the tweeter level down any further? based on your EQ curve, it looks like your tweeters are running a little hot.

Can your HU do bandpass filters on your mids? I smell a perfect candidate for active.

They are already on the -2db setting, so no, no further adjustment. I think running them off axis, pointed more towards the listener is bad for these guys. They need to be on-axis for best results. Funny you should mention active, as a JBL MS8 was to be next on my purchase list. But that won't be for a while, I've got some things to take care of first.

I would strongly advise against getting the JBL MS-8. You need an Audison Bit processor. The bit ten is around the same price as the MS8 and is far superior. The MS-8 is a soup sandwich.

WOW! I just read through the manual of the Bit ten. It's intense. But it does look like the superior device. My first idea was to run the tweeters off the MS8 internal amp, and have 200w going to the mids. But with the bit ten, I would need an external amp for the tweeters. And I connect it with the front speaker outputs, instead of RCAs. I would tune with a computer, as I don't want a secondary volume control or another device to tune and tweak with while on the go, too distracting for a tweaker like me. :D Now I'm not sure which way to go. But I have time, I still have to save up for it, it's not like I can run out and buy one right now anyways. Ah, decisions. Always something that needs improvement in the car audio world.

I recommend hard wiring your RCA connections into the bit ten inputs. That way you still retain subwoofer level control through your head unit. Not to mention, the speaker level outputs from Alpine radios tend to distort fairly early in their volume spectrum compared to the RCA outputs. And yes, if you are going to go the distance to use an audio processor, you really should go full active. Especially with something as elegant as an Audison Bit processor (time alignment, digital crossovers, etc..). What you could do is get one more 4 channel amplifier. It doesn't need to be as powerful as your PDX amp. Just run your tweeters and rear fill off of it. With the bit ten, you'll want to exclude your rear fill from the audio processor. The bit ten supports only 5 channels, which you will have with FR TW, FL TW, FR W, FL W, and sub. Just run your rear fill channels straight from the deck to the amplifier and it should be tuned to be low enough volume that it won't compromise your finely tuned front & sub stages. If you need some pointers on how to correctly tune an Audison Bit processor to take full advantage of its capabilities, pm me when you're ready to cross that bridge. I'm a bit of a guru when it comes to those devices.

So after a few days of listening, it seems like my tweeters are overpowering my mids. I adjusted the EQ on the deck, but have the mids boosted up to +5 on the various EQ levels (ie. 120Hz, 500Hz, 1.6kHz) I'm going to pull the door panels off, disconnect the subs and tweeters, and see if I can get the mids to play up to their potential. I also think I may have connected the tweeters to the +2db setting, so I'll check that as well. Any suggestions on how to do this? I have 240w running to the comp set, so the mids should be doing something, as they are rated for 300peak. I also have some F.A.S.T. foam rings coming my way, thanks to Aw9d, so hopefully that will help some as well. Also gonna try this http://www.parts-express.com/xtc-6-1-2-round-large-frame-foam-baffle-pair--260-788
and see if they help any.
