if your 2TR-FE has ever left you stranded - what went wrong?

I'm asking this to help myself gather spare parts for long trips.

Worked as a Toyota technician for several years.. only had one TR get towed in. It blew a head gasket with over 200k miles on it and admittedly towed well over what the truck is rated for. Water pump failed, the rest was history. We put a head gasket on it and the truck is still on the road.

The 2trfe doesn't fail... took mine on a 4k km trip this summer, brought spate spark plugs, cv axles and fluids. I only carry spare CVS because I'm locked in the front.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Close, I changed the squeaking tensioner pulley before it seized (forcing me to buy the entire tensioner). Just looking for good low mile alternator, now

keep a spare serpentine... or hell replace your current serpentine and keep the old one as a spare. Thats about it really... the 2TR is a freaking bullet proof motor.

My starter started going out at about 175k, it didnt leave me stranded per say, since i have a manual, but its something to bear in mind if you have an auto and are traveling quite a bit. I replaced mine and my alternator at the same time for preventative maintenance. Im now at 205k with no problems. I agree 100% with the comment on the 2TR being bullet proof. I run mine hard and never think twice about it

The tensioner pulley bolt worked its way lose at 75 mph. I replaced the pulley 2 years prior. It really is a terrible design a nut that can not easily be access to change the pulley. The replacement tensioner is threaded to eliminate the problem. happened right around 100k.

I love threads like this. Makes me feel good about my purchase. And ya, I'd maybe keep plugs and a serpentine. Not sure what else would be useful for a long trip.

Just twice. Unrelated to engine durability.

If the manifold air injection pump fails, does the truck go into limp mode or does it just illuminate the CEL with no functional limitations?

Pump failure is rare enough on our trucks that I wouldn't let it keep you up at night. They were awful about failing on the Tundra, but very seldom do they poop out on our trucks.

My old first gen 2.7 had the head gasket and ceramic exhaust ring go at 187k. That was about $500.

My 05' has a coolant leak in cyl #1. Im praying it doesnt have a cracked head, and it just needs the head gasket replaced. 228k. Other than that, I have only replaced belt, water pump and t-stat, starter, coolant bypass, valve cover gasket, and regular maintenance ie plugs, air and cabin filter, coolant flush, oil and filter etc. There were issues with the charcoal canister/evap system throwing codes but I read on TW that overfilling fuel could be the issue and so far its gone away (fingers crossed). I personally think the 2TR series is a very dependable engine, as long as its taken care of.
