going from anza to lake hemit over thomas mountain i thought I heard a pop/clang. moment we stopped to stretch i look under my rear end and sure enough, completely snapped. luckily i had the tools to remove it so it wouldn't be banging around.

I haven't noticed any difference, and I drove down 74. do we really need rear shocks? :D

Lol damn. Throw some halfway decent shocks on there now and it'll feel like driving on a bed of marshmallows .

Have you decided on which shock you'll run?

Yes, you needs shocks... they act as limit straps with our trucks so you don't bugger up brake lines.

im just going back with monroes. I don't do enough off roading to want to get bilsteins or anything. the ones I had were only about 2 inches longer than stock. im thinking that played a part in why they snapped since I got a 2.5 inch lift. but I have a list of shocks here that ill be choosing from. probably going to do 4 or 6 inches longer than stock.

Make sure that the collapsed length won't be a problem with your suspension configuration. Bottoming out the shock before your bump stop is bad news. Going with a longer shock will almost certainly increase your collapsed length.

Did the same thing on on my 99 4runner while wheeling in Canyonlands near Moab. Bent the shock over so l wouldn't puncture my tire. Wheeled the rest of the weekend. Then drove 350 mls home. Replaced it two weeks later. Really didn't notice any difference in the ride.

i am noticing that when i hit a bump in the road my rear end bounces several times. but that's expected since that's what shocks are for.

I dont think the length of shock was the issue.

When I broke a shock in Mexico I instantly noticed it. I was bouncing like crazy and the rear end bottomed out several times. It probably didn't help that I had several hundred pounds of camping and off roading stuff in my truck at the time.

The springs carry the load, the shock is to slow/control the movement of the suspension and help keep your rubber on the ground over bumps and corners. You do need them. So bad/no shocks, lots of bounce, poor traction, bottoming on bumps etc. They're not meant to be limiting straps. On the rear, unloaded, you won't notice it as much in these trucks but with a load or bad road surface it will be more apparent.

I broke a rear shock wheeling and daily drove the truck for 6months with only 1 rear shock. It handled ok.

You do what you gotta do.

The virtual bitch slap is warrented for techride thoug

Whats wrong with only 1 rear shock on a dd not carrying anything? It handled the same as with two shocks. Dont give me the safety speech because the reality is 99% of the mods we do either make our trucks less safe for ourselves or others.

2 yrs later i blew another rear shock out and drove on it for a few more months until i could redesign my rear shock mounting points.

yeah I don't see the problem with driving on 1 rear shock. my tech buddy did warn me that it will cause increased ware from excessive bouncing. and since i work at a parts store, theyre only like 25 bucks. ill probably get at least 1 on my next paycheck.

Just messing with you, that's a judgement call... although 6 months is pretty ghetto imo.

Techride was actually wrong. Friends, don't use shocks as limiters.

If the shocks were center mounted you just lose 1/2 your dampening. Since they're outboarded you lose control over 1 wheel. So on bumpy roads you have 1 wheel that will be losing traction with every bump instead of staying on the ground. On bumps that hit both tires at the same time you have 1 shock doing double duty at best. Go to the gym and curl your max weight, then try the same with only 1 arm. The rear of the taco is light enough and the ride isn't exactly awesome to start with. On pavement and unloaded you might not notice much more than a bit more body roll in the turns, and over a long enough time you'll get spring fatigue faster on that side.

What kinda smooth ass roads do you people drive on to not notice a shock missing? I can literally get air going over the bumps in the road here
