4.88's are exactly the same as stock with tires that actually measure out to 37" on an 05+ taco. At 100mph GPS speed the speedometer reads 106 mph in my truck, which is about the same as it was bone stock with 265's. My landcruiser has 4.88's with 285's. It's almost comical how fast it runs through the gears in low range.

Thanks for that, I think I will look into 4:88s. Funny part it shops in the area are limited on fron gearing for the taco! Only one local shop said they can get the front gears. ha ha, you should change your profile name to 100mph :) its what I know u as

Who do you guys get your gears from?

Its fine for me.. I roll at 75-80 just fine. Milage is ok considering the 36's. I wanted the gearing for wheeling, and I like the acceleration. I can speak from experience that when locked up front and rear with all wheels spinning that I still bog down in heavy snow.

ECGS is hard to beat. Excellent customer service, great warranty, and easy shipping. You place your order and the thirds show up in a 5 gallon bucket. You swap them out, and send yours back in the same bucket. Your truck is only down for a few hours, and you get gears set up right. It's hard to find mechanics that can set up Toyota gears.

Cool, thanks.. ive talk to a lot of local shop "experts" and seems like their doing a lot of guessing and some dont even know what front diff I have.which i found is a 8" clamshell

One local shop said they can install the front and rear gears.. parts and labor for $1550 including crush washers and said they inspect bearings but dont change the unless visible upon install. What u think about that?

1550 seems too high. You can buy F/R gears for $550 shipped and I'd say no more than $300 ea for gear install.

Same thing through ECGS would be $1260. The only local place near you I would even consider to get gears installed is Marlin Crawler down in Fresno. If you are worried about installing the diffs yourself I'm sure there is a member nearby with the knowledge to change them willing to help for beer and pizza. It's easy, and you get to look under her skirt. http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/c-1065072-assembled-3rds-clamshells-05-tacoma.html

Youre right.. they are cheaper, and if they know their gears it might be the way to go. I dont mind doing the imstall myself, just not the setting up. Funny part is I would be more comfortable removing the front which is a little more work but I watched a youtube video on the rear! Its not too bad, just need to adjust the fork of the rear locker before you slide out the carrier. Thanks... maybe ill just do my rear for now and remove my front driveline till i pay off some bills so I can get a Arb fromt clamshell when im ready.. do it right the first time

I looked up MarlinCrawler as well. They know their stuff too and normally sell a complete clamshell already loaded but are out of them right now and id have to drive to drop off my core about 3hrs each way, I just found out why my driver axle has a bunch of play in it! Toyota pulled a bad one there! No machining on the diff for the spider gear location?? I know theres a cheap fix but one more reason I wanna ger a Arb.

~$1500 seems pretty high for US prices. That's about what it would cost me here in Canada.

I haven't bought anything from ECGS yet, but everyone I talk to on the boards here seems to be very happy with their service and prices. I've shopped around for someone to do gears and an ARB for my truck and ECGS keeps standing out as the best option. (Other than a company in Canada that, depending on exchange rate, may or may not be cheaper. That doesn't help you though)

Not if you take into consideration the labor to swap the diffs. If the company will be swapping the whole thing out and doing everything 1500 is pretty good. ECGS charges 675 for the rear and 550 for the front, 1225 for just the regear. For 275 in labor it's worth it IMO, the front diff is a pain in the dick to remove. If that's just for the regear then it seems a little high.

That was for the comlpete job which is less than $300 extra in labor and I get to keep my diffs which I know are low miles if I dont replace all the bearings... you know how it is though $100 here , $100 there.. thats a few hundred I can spend somewhere else :) pluss if everyone re omends ECGS you would think are pretty good... i wish someome would be us for starting a group buy :)

ECGS is where I had mine done as well. 4.88's with ARB in the front. The big plus is that they have a warranty and thats what sold me on them.

4wheelparts charges $600 per diff plus fluids. That's just install, no parts. A buddy of mine works there. As stated, ECGS is a blessing on their prices, warrenty and customer service. As long as you can pull and install the diffs yourself then that's def the way to go

WOW! Just priced out both. It's around $1900 for me to order gears, locker, install kits, and do it myself. OR pay $2100 for ECGS for completely assembled diffs. That's an easy choice.

I just never realized an ARB is so expensive
