Took mine in again yesterday after the squeak came back...no transmission replacement, but they told me toyota is working on an updated bellhousing that will be out at the first of the year...apparently there's an alignment issue with the current design. Hopefully they'll make the pilot shaft out of steel this time...either way, I'm glad to see they're coming up with a design fix.

I am having the same problem. I have a 2007 with 52,000 miles on it and it has been making the noise for the last 15,000 of that. I am actually glad to hear it may be the throwout bearing and not a bearing in the transmission.

Boy am I glad I did a little research on this truck. I've known many old farts that converted from US made full sizes to Tacomas and Tundras, and I suspected they had figured out it was a superior product. I bought a GMC 1500 5 speed RWD in 01, and somehow it knew last year that it had hit 150k miles (I drive, highway, quite a bit) and in the last 12 months it's gone through complete XMSN replacement (ratcheting sound in all gears), clutch (was due), Master cylinder, fuel pump, and is in the shop for a 2nd master cylinder now. It's well beyond the point where no matter how much $ I pour into it to fix it, I'll never get that money back in a vehicle sale.

Now knowing what all the old farts figured out years ago, that the Toyota is in general, a superior product, I went looking for a Tacoma Access Cab, V6, 4x4, Manual. I test drove a 2009 and it should suit all of my needs. The dealer wouldn't come off of their invoice price of 26,4, so I hit the bricks and left them with a truck that became an 09 leftover the next day. I've found a dealer that will sell a 2010 in the correct configuration for 25,1, and I want to be all over it. I'm ready to drive a few hours to save $1300.

And then I read this thread. While on the upside, it appears that Toyota has eventually manned up and replaced the problem children, that only happens on visit number 4 or 5 for service, and it happens near the end of the 5yr/60k powertrain warranty. Sounds like 1) A pain in the ass 2) Real close to falling outside of the warranty's limits. At the speed I put miles on the GMC, in a Toyota I'll be outside of that warranty in 3-4 years, and based on the breakdown point of the throwout bearing / pilot shaft / bellhousing alignment issues described here, I'll find those within 2-3 years.

    The questions:

The last post in this thread was a whole month ago - Has there been a Tech Svc Bltn, recall, or replacement part(s) issued since then?

Is it worth chasing the dealer around multiple times to get this fixed?

Even then, is it really fixed, or is the "new" replacement XMSN going to start shitting bearings 40-50k miles later, just like the original XMSN did?

I don't want to have this kind of problem go down in the wintertime - If the truck is going to be in the shop for multiple iterations, that puts me on the motorcycle multiple times. I wanted to buy the Toyota because of the "legendary reliability" that the GMC has not had over the last year...

I'm not a fan of my Tacoma. Too many annoying issues other than the bearing. Buy a Ford truck.

So, I just bought an '05 4x4 DC MT from a used car dealer with 59k...

    Just noticed the squeeling TOB...

Thought I would check out the problem on the googles...

Immediatly followed by a large pit in my stomach...

Anyone know if Toyota allows their 60k warranty to transfer to new owners?

    I think I may puke.

I have a 07 Tacoma, 44,000 miles, 6 speed manual, same problems with throw out bearing, haven't had it replaced yet. Dealer in Little Rock (North Point ) says not covered under 5/60 warranty, Talked to Customer Relations Manager at dealer, called Toyota (on hold for 1 hr 15 min) finailly talked to Senior Customer Experience and got same response (not covered) and will not admit to there being a common problem. Filed complaint with BBB, same response, Toyota will provide no assistance case closed!! Can the people that had it covered under 5/60 warranty give more info (name of Dealer ect..) that may help my cause?

My 08 taco 20k miles just started to chirp, put slight pressure on the clutch and it goes away. Anyone, know about the redesigned parts that are supposed to be available in Feb-2010 that I've heard about.

This sounds like a pretty serious yet common problem? Throwout bearings shouldn't need to be replaced in that quantity at such low mileage. The fact that this is happening to multiple years/owners tells me the problem lays in the design, not the individual.

Is yours a 5 speed or 6 speed? If it is a 5 speed, I do not think they have the same parts. I think the 5 speed shaft is removable from the bell housing. Of course, your's could be an entirely different issue.

I have this exact same problem. Never really thought it was a big deal till a few weeks ago when it started to get worse (chirps / squeals almost all the time now) I am gonna call the dealership and see what they say. I bought it as a 'Certified' pre owned and got the 100k extended warranty. It has 91k right now, so I need to jump on this to have any luck at all. Also, does anyone know if the extended certified 100k warranty would have any impact on the rear spring tsb? Cause my rear springs are bad (negative arch, and squeak like crazy) and I would love a new set. . . :D Not sure if it works like that though.

I talked to my dealer here in Reno and they said they have heard about it, but it is not covered at all under any warranty. Also asked about the rear springs and that was only covered if I got it in before 3/36 warranty. At the time I had 54,000 miles. This is my second Tacoma I have purchased from them, and even that didn't get me anywhere.
I have to be honest though, I find it hard to believe that some people are claiming to have had there transmissions replaced because of this. To me that would be like replacing my entire axles because my tires were making noise. JMHO!
Now to go mudding with all this rain and snow :D

I'm sorry Ridereno, I have to be honest though, I find it hard to believe that you reply to a post that you know nothing about, it doesnt sound like you are having the same problem with the throw out bearing that some people are, or you would offer some helpfull info

As someone who had a Throwout Bearing go out and is now have the transmission replaced, I can speak to the fact that there seems to be a link. I took the truck in for a TOB squeel and the shop found a noise in the transmission. They took the tranny apart and found that it was eating itself, they could not determine why. Whether the transmission caused the issue, the TOB caused the issue, or the previous owner railing on the truck caused the issue, no one knows.

Though my TOB and my clutch were not covered under the power train warranty my transmission was (though since I just bought the truck the car dealership that I bought it from had a warranty and that is covering the work). So they are putting a "reconditioned" transmission in the truck under warranty. I am paying for the clutch work. As of right now, I am $650 out of pocket and have had my truck in the shop longer than I was able to drive it. We'll see if this happens again with the new transmission, if so, Toyota has a serious problem.
