I got this little silent thud upon complete stopping and then another one after I hit the gas again. The darn gear shifter seems to be moving more than it shoud, if at all, when I torque the engine and come to a stop. WTF:confused: Engine & tranny mounts look good, u-joints are fine. Is my auto-trans not down shifting into 1st smoothly or wha'? Fluids are sound. Anybody got the DL on this one?

    Welcome to Tacoma World!
What you are experiencing is "Axel Wrap". Because Toyota uses longer rear leaf springs at a softer spring rate for ride quality and off raod capability, this is a common issue. Only way to fix it is with a new spring pack, or an AAL. Some people have fixed the problem by greaseing the drive shaft slip joint. :)

It's still sounds like a mount issue, the torque is moving the whole Engine & transmission. The mounts might look good but something is not right. Unless now that I think... something internal in the tranny is not tight which is allowing the torque to transfer through the shifter. :frusty:

True. I didnt think about the shifter moveing. As long as its not moveing more than 1.5" it shouldnt be the mounts.
Saunagangsta, How much is the shifter moveing?

I think I have this same issue. It feels like the truck doesn have a super smooth final stop like it should right?

Will the TSB on the rear leafs work to fix the problem maybe?

I have the same issue on my 05 DC 4x4 auto. Took to 2 different dealers and said same thing. A past thread someone was able to fix with a lift so I'm waiting for the 2.5 or 3 incher. A neighbor of mine had the same thing in his 03 nission 4 door 4x4 Frontier so maybe it's a Japanese thing.

So here goes, ... Look and you shall find. Chris4x4 and Tacomaman06 pointed me in the right direction. I posted a question B-4 I used the search option here on TW. Now I know to search this awsome Forum for information. Axle Wrap is caused by this photo on my 1999 4x4. The springs are gone, worn slap out as Tacomaman06 would say. Have a look and see, they actually bend in the WRONG Direction. I don't have the ca$h to do a complete lift at the moment, and I just bought new tires, so I will get the wheelers 4 leaf to fix this problem.

    New Leaf Springs......$430.00
    No "Clunk" on acceleration....free
T.W. and friends helping me out on this one......Priceless

My truck did the same thing. It hasn't done it since I installed the AAL.

Your springs look about normal. Tacomas have a "reverse arch" to their rear leaves, for better off road flex. The side effext is axel wrap. Fixed with an AAL, or replacement leaf packs. You will know when your springs are shot, as the ride will become harsh.
