I feel a thump about 1/2 sec. after stopping. It's most pronounced after I put $50 worth of gas in. I looked underneath and could find nothing loose. I did notice that the tank is pretty long. 2006 base Taco 4x2 w/4 cyl. & 5 sp.
    Anyone?

this turned out to be my drive shaft. There are several points on it that need grease and the dealer was not greasing it when I had oil changes. Found someone posting somehting bout it, told the dealer to grease it, now its a lot better! I think it will need more grease as I go as I am sure it was bone dry

My own, similar thumping noise is caused by gas sloshing in the tank. Tank must not have much in the way of baffling.

im almost certain it is gas sloshing in the tank as mine only does it between 3/4 and 1/4 of a tank. As another member just said probably not much baffling in the gas tank to prevent sloshing of the gas

Is this the thump that almost feels like a tap in the rear end from another vehicle?
The first time I had it happen was during a snowstorm and I thought I got rear-ended in my brandy new truck! I will have to check to see how it correlates with the gas in the tank.

Alot of these "thump" experiences where you think someone rear ended you after comeing to a stop is due to axle wrap...get a aal and it goes away.

I have aal's also and have never experienced the thump...then again I usually keep the gas tank full and don't come up to stops abruptly.

Newbie here: What is an aal? The first time it happened to me, the stop wasn't by any means abrupt. It was during a snowstorm and I was being extra careful not to stop too quickly. When I did stop I felt the thump which felt like the guy behind me tapped me. I looked in the rear view but the guy was far enough behind me and he had this look on his face like "WTF are you looking at" He took a right at the lights abruptly which contributed to my paranoia

AAL = add a leaf , it's an extra leaf spring added to your rear pack to increase the rears ride height

Thanks for the info. Seems like an inherent poor design if I have to add to the rear pack to get rid of the thump on a brand new vehicle!

I'm thinking about a lift down the road. Is it safe to assume that the lift would also eliminate the problem?

depending how you lift it. a lot of people use add a leafs for the rear...which would also stop the thumping

Can you also explain the dynamics of "axle wrap"? What's occuring and why is it only intermittently happening?

    Thanks

Mine does it, too. Has ever since it was new and it doesn't matter how full or empty the gas tank is. My old chevy truck does it, too. The dealer told me years ago on the Chevy that it was something in the drivetrain and they'd have to pull the driveshaft and transmission to "tie-down" the problem. I just left it alone and got used to it. However, I'm gonna try to see about the grease fittings on the Taco.
