this. I'll be doing the cutting. That's where I get annoyingly meticulous. And then generally I stop being so meticulous and start being more hack and smash-ey. Just depends on how smoothly things are going..

Got to do a little bit of wheeling with the new gears and bumper. Didn't get to do a whole lot due to it being the Fall Crawl and it being hella crowded at Harlan ORV park. But still had a good time and didn't break anything.

In the process of installing this Shittybilt X20, the control box will not work in any of the "factory" locations so I'm going to have to make a bracket so I can mount it to the top of the bumper, either that or use some industrial velcro or 3M double sided tape. I'll try the bracket first, but I may just go the lazy route and slap it on there with some sticky.

Seems more like a shitty bumper design that doesn't have room for the solenoid control box for any winch model.

There's a super small list of Warn winches that it fits with. There's also a couple of brackets and stuff that I either tossed many years ago or they are in the garage at my mom's house.

What are we looking at? Gasket break?

if so, I’d have more confidence in a bead of silicone than that rubber band.

Yeah, it's a giant o-ring that goes around the gear cover. I had just regreased the planetary gears with good quality grease and went to put it back on, it requires a little jimmying for everything to fall into place... then I went to clock it and that O ring started poking out from two directions haha.

The other side is a flat rubber gasket, Idk why they didn't do that on this side.

Apparently the factory speedometer gear is actually 30 teeth not 31, so the 33 tooth gear is actually reading my speed as slightly slower than what I'm actually going. I'm not sure what it reads at higher speeds but it's reading 25 mph when I'm going about 26 mph which is 3-4% error, meaning I corrected it too far. I may actually buy the 32 tooth speedometer gear. Only took a few mins to install.

Ordered a 32 tooth speedo gear - that should bring me within a 0.3% margin of error, provided the % per tooth calculation is 3.3%, based on reading 75 when going 70 on a 30 tooth, and reading 68 mph while going 70 on a 33 tooth.

Finally done with this. Pretty much encountered some kind of problem every step of the way. But it was a good learning experience.

Any more updates on the gears?

Loving what you've done to the truck!

yep, they are broken in and working nicely. Got a lot of low end torque back. MPGs seem to be around 18.5ish highway.

I've been looking into gears and reading a few of your old posts, I'm in a similar boat as you were, driving style, usage etc. So you're happy you didn't go with 4.88?

Yes, I do too much highway driving to get 4.88s. I was talking on the CB with some 2nd gen guys on the way back from a wheeling trip, some had 4.88s and one guy had 4.56s. The 4.56 guy and me were getting better highway MPG than the 4.88 guys. I doubt the 4.88s would make up for that in city driving. The 4.56 is still slightly over geared over stock, so if you add in some weight and aero, you're roughly back to stock-ish

Awesome thanks. I don't do much highway driving, mostly when going on camping trips, I'm usually loaded to the max on those. Sounds like 4.56 will work for me as well.
