I flew with this captain once. One of the engines on our plane would practically catch fire every time we would start it so he brought it to the attention of one of the mechanics. The mechanic said that it was normal. The captain said that if you can make the other engine do that(ie almost catch on fire=normal), then he would be happy to agree and take the aircraft. That particular engine was fixed shortly thereafter.

The moral to this story is that if they give me the same...."...it is normal.." crap, I will demand to randomly pick a similar truck on the lot. If it makes the same noise, Fine, I will be happy with it. If not, they better fix that bitch!!!!

the tick is annoying but - the stock sound coming from under the hood bugs me more - sounds like a sewing machine - a well build one that I love of course

I'll give you the sewig machine noise. That is the normal sound of a busy valvetrain....especially a DOHC one. But a ticking noise(whether normal or not) has never really been associated with a normal sounding engine. I have owned Toyotas all of my life and I do know the "normal" Toyota tick. That is not my complaint on this one. This sounds more like an exhaust manifold leak. It sounds like a 1973 rusted out Ford Country Squire station wagon.....and it is brand spanking new!!!!!

whats your thoughts on adding an oil additive? I was old by an old school mechanic that the lifters could need to be replaced. He recommended an oil additive to try and clean it off. Just doesnt sound right. The ticking get really quiet after its been idling for awhile. Its loud when I get back from a long drive and listen to it idle.

Dont add an oil addative. Your engine sounds fine. My 2.7 sounded the exact same as yours, as does my friends 05 2.7. Most every Toyota engine I have been around has a ticking of some sort. I belive they use solid lifters which make noise as opposed to hydrolic lifters. The ticking intensity will vary from one engine to the other, as a difference of a few thousandth will make a difference in sound. Not a big deal. Anoying, yes. Affect reliability? No. Not unless one is out of adjustment, which you would feel in the performance of the vehicle. :)

there are no lifters on overhead cam engines. the cams are on top of the valves. the lifters are on traditional engines with regular cam shafts the lifters would get gummed up a little if u did not change the oil enough and tick a little especially when cold. but u dont have any lifters.

You right . Ever since I have been around Toyota engines (1997) I have heard of the infamouse "lifter tick". I thought that some have lifters while some dont. I know that some of the engines use a shim and bucket design, and if I recal, my 2.7 had threaded adjusters. But I never gave it much thought about lifters being used or not on some motors. Now that you pointed this out (and I should know better), I feel like a dolt.
