So i basically want some gears as 5th has become useless ever since i got my 31" Dureatracs on. I have axle code BO2A which means 8" ring gear, 3:58, 2 Pinion, Open. So what should i upgrade to? 4.88? i probably will get 33's next year but it depends on how my truck looks with my lift and 31's already on it.

How hard is the install? i have all basic handtools and air tools...idk any info pages i can read?

Check out eastcoastgearsupply.com they have toyota gears and some info I think. I just pulled inspected changed a bearing and rebuilt my front diff. It's no cakewalk but with some tools and lots of patience it can be done. Sure you really want 4.88 to spin 33's?

going from a 3.58 to a 4.88 is a huge jump... I have the same ratio and was just gonna maybe swap a 3rd member from a 3.73 or a 4.10 from another tacoma if mine becomes a problem with larger tires. I think it'll bring me down to more manageable highway RPMs... I turn a little over 2500 at 80mph in 5th

You do the rear, you have to do the front or you will destroy your TC or front diff when you switch to 4x4..

THANKS FOR THE LINKS!!! the 4.88 gears was just a guess, through more research i think 4.10 might be better. i almost want to go looking for a whole axle with an e-locker at junk yards but we will see. what do you guys think? for anywhere from 31" to 33" inch tires?

If you definitely want too go 33's and don't do a lot of highway go 4.88. If you stay with the 31's go 4.10. If you plan on a lot of highway with 33's go 4.56.

you should be good with 4.10.... i dont think you should go with 4.56 unless you are going to throw on some 35's or bigger

33's on a 4cyl need lower gears than 4.10 for sure. 4.10 is pushing it with my 3.4 and 33's.

    4.56 would be a choice...
I wished more people would change there gears when going with larger tires...
All of these guys on here with stock gears that say they have plenty of power with 33" or larger tires's are full of crap...(please stay in the slow lane) ha ha...
