Hello I recently purchased my first Tacoma a few months ago. It is a 1999 Toyota Tacoma prerunner 3.4l with the TRD offroad. I have noticed the shocks on this truck need to be replaced, and could use some advice. Also I think the leafs are shot.
I will admit I know nothing about suspensions and I have been asking and looking around for more info, but the more I learn the more options I feel like I have.
Initially I was going to just replace everything with stock parts, however now I think I would like to have a 2"-3" lift. I do not plan on driving offroad but I do live in Washington state and we get a lot of rain.
I have read many people suggesting the bilstein 5100's. But I have found a Skyjacker 3" Lift Kit with AAL's for my prerunner. And the only cheep leafs I have found are on EBAY.
Unfortunately I do not have a few thousand to spend on my suspension so I have decided to come here and ask for some advice. Also I am including some pics of my leaf to show how bad they look.

Yes, I do have some experience turning a wrench, mostly with tires, and changing oil. Also I have decided to go with the Bilstein 5100 adjustables. I have not really tried to change springs or shocks before.
However, I am going to bet that if my rear leafs and all my shocks are bad that I should replace the front coil springs when I replace the other stuff. Are any generic coil springs ok to mount with these Bilstein 5100 adjustables? I do understand I will need to use a spring compressor for the coils. So far I have found all these items that I need on ebay, unless someone on here knows a cheaper place for these parts. Thank you for your advice.

For front coils i'd recommend stock, or OME 881's or 882's, if you go OME then you should go with OME nitrocharger shocks as the ride will be better then with then 5100's.
as for your question about the coils and 5100's, yes as long as they are stock replacement for the tacoma, if they are a lift coil they should be OK if they are set at 0, but the valving might be stiff.
As for the rear springs, i would go with OMD refurbishment, you can get some chevy springs from
the junkyard and build the pack for the height and load capacity.

    I forgot to cover this,
    Front suspension, it's fairly simple,
get the spindle out of the way, we put a floor jack under the LCA to take the load from the spring, then we unbolted the ball joint from the UCA and just let the spindle hang there when we worked.

The shock should be able to pop out if you unbolt the top, then remove the bolts on the part that hold the bottom part of the shock in, remove the shock by lowering it through the big hole in the bottom of the LCA (it's sorta obvious)

Coils, you will need a coil compressor, we borrowed one from auto zone, we put the compressor on the outside of the coils but the space was sort of tight around the coil so make sure you put the compressor back in the same position on the spring if you remove the compressor while the spring is off the vehicle.

    The rear is extremely simple,
The shocks should be straightforward in removal and installation.
The springs, just take 2 big wrenches or sockets and remove the bolt that holds the leaf pack to the shackle on the bottom half, and on the front spring hangar you just unbolt it.

Make sure you take PBlaster or some other type of break free fluid to each and ever nut and bolt you think you'll touch when you change the parts, every day for ~ 3 days before you start wrenching.

I like the abjustables since i plan to upgrade my stock tires at a later time. I was advised i may need to lift my truck at some point if i want bigger rims. So now that i know i need to replace my suspension i figured im well off with the 5100's so when i do get my rims i can lift the truck. Just 2"-3" is all i want since it is only a prerunner i wont be taking it off road.
