I thought I had this issue a week ago. Fortunately it turned out to be a bad seal on my oil filter hence a (much) cheaper/easier fix. It got me thinking though. I am nearing the end of my powertrain warranty. Can you buy an extended warranty for just the powertrain?

You can if you’re under 36k miles and under 3 years of original purchase date. Being that it’s 2020 and I’m assuming you’ve racked close to the 60k, you would not qualify any longer.

Ok. I looked into extending my warranty before I hit 36,000 and decided against it, but I wasn't sure if you can extend just the powertrain portion before 60,000 / 5 years since that's when that part expires.

Okay guys I found the same leak on my 2016 Trd sport.. problem is I just purchase the truck with 59k two months ago. It now has 61k but it’s a Toyota CPO vehicle. I took it to the dealership last week and they told me to drive it a few 100 miles and bring it back. So today I took it back in.. we’ll there trying to say that the leak should of been seen by the dealership that sold me the truck. (Almost like a Pre-existing condition)

Sounds like there trying to get out of covering the repair but it’s covered till 100k right ? They haven’t said no yet but they said they would call me tomorrow.

It's not that big of a deal. Just a small oil leak that takes a long time to fix. Many of these 3.5's are doing that, not just the Tacoma.

Fight it. Bought my truck used at 68k miles. Even though the dealership saw this before the 60k warranty expired and never “wrote it down” and called it a seep to keep an eye on, they wouldn’t do anything. After many phone conversations with Toyota directly, they did a one time good will and covered half of the cost. Still hoping to get the other half.. I hear many of these 2016’s are doing this.

So if they refuse to cover the repair call the Toyota corporate office and raise hell?

Well, maybe if I raised hell, they probably would’ve covered my entire cost. I tried to talk politely haha.. But yes, raise hell and demand and good will repair or better yet, the dealership that sold it to you should’ve caught something like that. It’s a $2k repair and dismantling many parts.

Do you have anymore pictures? It’s a CPO, so it has warranty until 100k. Are you able to return to the original Toyota dealer you bought it from? It depends what advisor you get as well. When mine leaked i voiced my concern in taking long trips and fearing it may leave me stranded due to low oil pressure. It’s a hefty bill. For mine they pulled the motor out. It’s been a well known issue in the 2016’s. Return to the dealer you bought it from, really stand on that it’s a CPO and if left unfixed it’ll get worse.

I might have to take it back, it’s a 4 hour trip tho. Have you had any issues since they fixed the leak ?

Is this still an issue w/ newer trucks, or did they fix the problem? Curious if my 2020 is at risk. Coming from someone who has owned over 10 Toyota/Lexus products... what a disappointment :/

I would think if you have a Certified Preowned that you could visit any Toyota Dealer for Warranty, no need to travel 4 hours.

Toyota's timing covers have leaked since 2005, this isn't new.

Typically it's the owners who haven't been consistant with oil changes, I usually see the leak when they are 10,000 over.

Stay on top of the changes, and consider every 5k instead of 10k.

You mention “you” usually see the leak... curious are you a Toyota tech? Makes no sense to me that going over on an oil change would induce a gasket leak with such low mileage. I’ve never seen the problem with my Toyota’s of past. Maybe I’m lucky?

Is it a huge deal? I wonder if dealing with a small leak is better than having the dealership take the engine out!

Seriously... I have never heard of removing an engine to fix a timing cover leak. Makes zero sense. Honestly mention of that is the only thing that has me worried.

I would try get that fixed soon. I bought an 05 Tundra with 4.0 a few months ago. It has the same leak and was losing oil rather quickly. About half way between the dots after about a week. I’m sure this started as a small leak and got worse over time. High mileage synth oil has helped slow the leak but mine still drips onto the engine crossmember and ground a little.

WTF it is a big deal . We don't want anyone under the hood changing gaskets on a relatively new motor and pay $2,000+ to boot .
