Not sure if it necessary to pull the engine for this repair.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
We usually reseal the covers on the trucks in the truck. At least the 4.0s. The 3.0 ain’t much different and I sure as hell know the cover on the 5.7 is more of a pain to do than the 3.5 and we do those in the truck too.

Only pull the engine on fwd cars to
    Do the covers

Pulling the engine seems unnecessary even though it can make it easier to do the actual re-seal. The extra disassembling of components may or may not have created other problems.

Really wondering why Toyota is pulling engines to re-seal the timing cover. Anyone have detail on that?

Does anybody know if this has been resolved for the newer (2019-2020) trucks? I noticed a lot of 2016 and 2017 trucks and was just curious if that’s because those vehicles have generated higher miles? Or, did Toyota change their process for applying sealant?

As much as I love my Tacoma it’s this type of internal combustion engine maintenance crap that I hate. As cars age the rubber seals dry out and oil leaks occur.

You don't have to remove the 2GR from any car to reseal it, but it makes it much easier.

I haven't done a 2GR tacoma yet but I intend to do it in the truck, I'll remove the diff and seperate the lower pan, then do the up top work.

I've done a few 2GR transversed in vehicle, but I do most out of the vehicle.

The issue is the lower pan prohibits the cover from being removed, and its a bear to get off.

I haven’t had any issues since then. I’ve put about 10k miles on it since the repair. They did change every single gasket in the engine as well so nothing should be leaking for a long time:fingerscrossed:

They did, they pulled the engine out and took it completely apart and replaced every single gasket in it.

So everyone’s that’s gotten this done are they replacing the timing cover as well? Or are they just resealing it with sealer and replacing all the gaskets of the pieces they tore apart? Looking at part diagrams it looks like the oil pump pick up tube is bolted to back of the timing cover and is why it’s so much work to repair the leak/cover. I agree with another post on here about taking the diff out and doing it that way. Seems easier than pulling the engine out.

Mine has the leak noticed it about 1500 miles ago. Cleaned it up and will monitor till summer when I go on my honeymoon so the dealer can have it while I’m gone. But overall I think in my opinion unless they’re replacing the cover as well I don’t think I’d want it done. New cover would give me peace of mind.

Now just the way my mind works.. wonder if it’s possible to take both motor mounts loose, lift the motor a bit and slide the pan off that way?

My dealer pulled the engine and the whole engine had every gasket/seal replaced. Why would a new engine cover make a difference if the faulty part is a gasket?? Otherwise it sounds like you need to set a day aside to replace your cover if you don’t think a new gasket will fix it!

My worry is maybe it’s somewhat of a casting defect. From what I’ve gathered on here it doesn’t look like it even uses a gasket so to speak it just uses silicone. And I do remember seeing on here that someone went through it a few times with the dealer until they put a cover on and fixed it. When you say they replaced every gasket did they have the heads off as well? Sounds like they treated you pretty well, hope I have the same luck!
I’m planning on keeping this truck at least 7 or 8 years maybe even 10 so just figured why take the chance on a cover?! I have warranty but I think I’d like doing it myself as well since we have a few that come into our shop that are out of warranty.

How much does it cost to extend the warranty before the 36k warranty expires?
