As long as the light shows through the tint you will have no problems.

u can have the tails tinted but u will get pulled over unless the reverse light section is not tinted. i got pulled over with mine and the cop was so fascinated that mine were covers and came off that he let me go and told me that the law is that the reverse light has to remain clear, the other parts can be tinted

That's not really true. You may have never been ticketed for it but you can't alter your lights unless the alteration is DOT approved. If they ticket you for that, you'll get a fine. From what I've read, it's not a $10 fix-it ticket (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc26101.htm).
Other laws that can apply which are fix-it tickets include the following:
Tail lights other than red (24600 VC).
Lack of rear reflectors. Two red reflectors are required on the rear of cars and trucks (24607 VC)
Tail lights that are too dim, washed out or show yellow, white or other colors (24600 VC).

Plus if you get rear-ended, the accident may be deemed your fault because you modified the tail lights.
