There was another member on here with the loud engine noise. He got a new replacement truck from Toyota as a result. Will post when I find the thread.

My truck makes this noise, 2014 build date 9/13. I have 20k miles and never noticed before, saw in the other thread video of '06 4runner making the same noise. Based on that and how many other people say they have the noise I'm not too worried. Ill do a oil analysis next oil change, if that looks bad maybe ill change my mind.

If it is the oil pump, why would the sound go away after it warms up? Why wouldn't it be consistent whether warm or cold?

Has it been determined this is a non issue? I met my aunt this past weekend for a camping trip and when we started our trucks in the morning her 2015 3k miles makes this noise. My 2012 with 50k is quiet compared to hers. The noise did go away once her truck warmed up. What are others being told about this?

Nissan is a word not spoken in my house and is referred to as the other "N" word. basically a cuss word. My wife and I had a Nissan that made a similar noise at first start up of the day. Took it to the dealer several times. They did not know what it was and finally said drive it until something breaks and we will fix it. I actually paid them to fix it. They did something, but it did not fix it. When the warranty was almost out it had become considerably worse and was doing it at every start. They said keep driving it and we will honor the warranty when whatever it is gives out. Turns out they did not document anything. I came back after warranty was out and they basically said "what are you talking about, who are you?" I was quite young at the time. Money was tight for me and my wife at that time. That was quite a hit to take. We could not afford two nice vehicles. I typically got her the best vehicle we could afford, and I drove a POS. Point is I learned to confirm documentation, go to another dealership if necessary, and do not hesitate to call the manufacturer.

Has anyone analyzed their used oil? That could tell a lot of what is going on inside your engine.

Are you going to tell them what your concerns are or let them do a blind evaluation of the oil?

I think just blind, they will tell me if there is too much metal etc for this many miles. Didn't look at the form yet so maybe i can put something on there. I haven't done the change yet so it will prob be a few weeks before i have anything

I just had my oil changed today by the dealer (part of the extended warranty package) and mentioned "the noise". I have a '14 TRD sport (build date Dec '13) and I made a recording this morning when starting to capture the sound, but of course they'll need to hear it for themselves so I'll need to leave the truck overnight. Since I was waiting for the oil change I asked the tech if we could try starting a couple of the '15's they still have on the lot to see if I can hear the same sound. He was willing to try so we got the keys to a couple of new 15's and headed to the lot. Both of the trucks started without any hint of the whining/grinding type noise that I'm used to on mine.

So, I'll need to book a time to leave them the truck and return the next morning and hopefully at minimum get this on file. For those who had the oil pump replaced/repaired did you get the sense this was something your dealer had to fight with Toyota to approve or was it acknowledged by Toyota as a problem?

If you just bought it, I think you can return it for like 30 days. No questions asked.

DO THAT. No doubt, I would

I want to know why that sound isn't heard right away -- it takes mine about 15 seconds for the noise to develop. I think that's the weirdest part.

Thanks for the response, sounds like the degree of responsiveness is dealer specific and not Toyota (corporate) based. I'm planning to drop off the truck after work and then return early the next morning to start it with the tech. Was it the entire oil pump assembly they replaced or just the relief valve as noted in a previous post?

I agree, it seems to start after all the other pumps and pressure items are finished their start up routine. As noted above, when I listened to a couple of new '15's today they were very quiet in comparison. I usually end up parked outside during the day and it's cool enough today that I should hear "the noise" when starting it up this evening. I'll be interested to see if it's toned down at all after the oil change, when I pulled out of the dealership this morning the engine noises in general seemed to be muted, but it was well warmed up by then.

I'm hearing this exact sound on cold start up as well. I was wondering what it was as I've heard it since I bought the truck recently, I only have about 700 kms. I attached a short video clip, it's not really super loud but you definitely hear it in the background. Once the engine warms up it sounds virtually silent, nothing unusual at that point.

Can't seem to attach the clip...
