Ah well. I'm not too worried over it, I'll drive it until it gets worse and take it to the dealer or when I find a low mileage dc 1st gen..

Try the next weight up of oil, and or some Lucas Heavy Oil Stabilizer. See if it helps.

Unbelievably, this cold startup noise is getting much quieter since I posted a few weeks ago. The temps have dropped considerably since that time hovering around the freezing mark today. It used to be quite loud and distinctive during those morning starts and it was much warmer at that time. The last couple of days I can still hear it but have to really listen for it to notice. Strange.... I thought it would get worse the colder it got outside.

One can never have too many light bars.
It could be a case of the motor breaking in.

doubt it, the 2014 I had did it for 15k miles until toyota replaced the oil pump... and then eventually had to give me a new 2015...

It'd be nice if this issue actually corrected itself. I think I'll take it back to the dealer and get them to check it out anyways to document it. The thing that bothers me is that I don't believe they are competent enough to replace the oil pump properly. I've heard far too many horror stories about the hack jobs these dealer techs can perform on your truck. The last thing I want is for them to open up my brand new motor. I would rather just leave it but then who knows what other problems may occur down the road due to the bad oil pump. How did you end up getting a new truck out of this? Does your new 2015 make any noises at all? I wonder how many new Tacomas are actually affected, this really sucks.

Calm down. Like every post you make is the exact same thing. FIY not every engine noise is piston slap. And no I do not advise walking into the dealership demanding a new engine.

I agree, their incompetence when fixing the truck is what cause them to have to buy back my 2014 and give me a 2015, they actually broke the radiator in the process and did not tighten the new one.

This was the next issue that they were unable to solve

Can't wait to see the results. Thanks bc. I'll send one in on the next change, but that will be a couple months. Got the kit already.

Oh I'm calm, none of my vehicles sound like that. I would not be calm if I went to the dealer and they said "that's normal, they all do that". These trucks are expensive, who wants one that sounds like a POS? Oh what a feeling!

Not meaning to thread jack, just posting a video of the way my truck sounds. Anyone else have that knocking sound? If you listen carefully you can hear a knocking sound. This is a cold start early am, 60 degrees outside.

Yeah I'm not saying it sounds "normal". I was referring to your statement about piston slap. It seems like every post you make about engine noises deals with this "piston slap". There are other things out there that could be producing that noise, so I wouldn't be blaming piston slap everytime. Just because an engine is making an abnormal noise, doesn't mean you need to replace the entire thing. To me, you're being over dramatic about the whole ordeal. Let the techs do their testing before anyone jumps to conclusions.
