I'd think the 90195 would be a good choice. My only experience has been with Tekonsha's Prodigy P2 and its worked well with a 3,000 lb bumper pull and a 3,700 lb modified gooseneck for several years and two Tacomas with well over 100K of towing miles. Whatever you get and wherever you mount it, make sure you can easily access the manual braking control. Its really handy to be able to activate that when you get a bit of sway. Mine was/is in the forward console cubby on the 05 and now the 12. I'd also suggest getting a seven round to four flat adapter unless the newer Tacomas come with both plugs.

When you say plug and play... it just hooks up to the rear plug by the rear bumper?

No, the brake controller plugs into a harness under the dash. But yes, you just plug it in and it worked. Very simple

where exactly? Thanks for your input. I’m about to travel next summer and towing my wife’s Honda Civic and planning to rent a U-Haul

If you are towing with a U-Haul car carrier, you don't need one. They have surge brakes. But to answer your question, it is wrapped up on the left hand side. Right above the foot rest under the dash
