After removing the topper on my Tacoma I noticed the paint under the plastic bed rail caps was worn through to shiny bare metal. Before I install the top on my 2010 I am going to remove the rail caps and apply some clear paint protective film. Any trick to removing the rail caps?

I would like to install the topper without the plastic bed rails but not sure if that is recommended.
