This will feel like a sports car compared to my '95 4Runner with the 150hp/170tq 3VZE.

That's just it. I never thought we'd see the day where we were collectively losing it over 270hp.

Bluet is busy repainting his brand new frame... (getting primer on) since Toyota can not even figure out how to paint freaken metal correctly.

Also Bluet is enjoying his 4.0 L Land Cruiser engine... let those who missed boat on 2gen, worry about lifted Sienna performance.

So I will let fanboys weasel out of this mess.

I think you're missing the point. The point is lack of meaningful growth in relation to the competition.

Toyota is now effectively making less torque than the current motor at a higher RPM and less hp than the competing trucks (GM twins). I think 30hp is pretty negligible personally, but it begs the question "It took 10 years to develop what exactly?"

I'm hoping the answer comes in the form of MPG... we won't know that for sure though for a while.

That 30 HP comes at almost 1000 more RPM. There's the difference. I think this and the 3.6 L GM motor line up okay. Honestly, stepping back and looking at that specification sheet, I think Toyota simply put out a 3rd gen truck that can compete better with what else is coming without reinventing the wheel. Which is just what Toyota does.
I'm disappointed, I was expecting more of a rant than that :(.

And I'm with you there. You want to see improvements somewhere, so I agree, the MPG needs to come up significantly. Otherwise, it's change for the sake of change only when you had a good work horse in terms of the 4.0L. But there's gotta be a limit to power somewhere. I don't know about you, but it makes me a little nervous knowing the numbers of people driving around that have 250hp beneath their right foot are increasing quickly. I'm not sure I love that fact.

When you say different, Are you referring to a clean sheet design or modifications to an existing design that has been around quite awhile resulting in a different designation? Any links on this?

No one knows. Looking at diagrams it could be the same block but things have moved around a bit.

If the truck physically does what it needs to do, then I'm not worried about what a couple numbers say. The Frontier had better numbers, but that didn't make it a better truck.

The intake and position of the alternator are different on the Coyote F150 in the F150 and Mustang. I think the blocks and heads are the same. Different cams and timing too.

I really need to consider what I want for my next rig. A gen 2 used Tacoma, a 2016 new Tacoma or a full-size truck. A gen 2 4.0 DCLB might fit the bill for pulling my lil' Casita 17 ft camper. Crappy thign is I could get better MPG with a full-size, but most-likely without the peace of mind that comes with owning a Toyota.

Regarding towing, my camper is 1500 lbs empty. I'm in the 2000 lb range with all my stuff.
Considering I average over 21 mpg with my 2.7l and no towing issues, I expect the 3.5l to almost fly.

My current Tacoma flies on straight roads too. Going from 6,000 feet to 10,000+ ft with wind and decreasing oxygen is another thing.

The 5th generation 4Runner gets better mileage and more power from a dual vVti version of the 4.0..... Wow toyota failed if the new tacoma can't produce more torque and power from a smaller block....

Again Toyota will underwhelm with specs but quality and reputation will carry it. GM, Ford and Fiat/Chrysler are the ones who have pissing contests over power.

This. The Frontier could be putting out 400lbft of torque, still not gonna buy it.

Will the 3rd gen do everything the 2nd gen can do as well if not better? The answer is yes so while all the mouth breathers try to conjure up something to complain about Toyota will be selling the sweet shit out of these trucks like they do the 2nd gen. I don't see how some can consider the 2nd gen a great truck and somehow the relatively minor tweaks to the 3rd gen make it a POS.
