Smart man. Do it right the first time, or work on it a second time.

I hate electrical work. I'd rather pay top dollar to have an expert do it right one time than have me ghetto rig stuff up and then redo it 3 more times until it looks semi profficient. Played that game already with my last truck...not gonna do it on the new truck.

I am trying to source someone to make a 5 to 6 connector harness for a UCON setup...have found a couple people that have done it, but looks like $750+ just for the harness. Will probably veto that until I decide to switch over to a URD SC or something. Happy with the TRD SC right now, my low end acceleration is nice, and pick up at highway speeds is great. I get my high speed demon out of me on my ZX10R.

A week and a half after starting on page 1 of this thread, I have finally finished. Much of this thread is like a text book: many many pages and posts have been bookmarked for future reference and study.

Of course, the MS Word document containing the list of questions is growing exponentially. :D

Bravo to Tor and everyone else who have contributed to this thread. I've idly wondered if someone at Toyota corporate or R/D has read this thread and understood what an absolute marvel their 1GR is and could be, compliments of people like Tor and his pioneering brethren.

I don't think anyone at Toyota listens to a damn thing we do or say over here. It was evident when I spoke to the Toyota reps at Rock Therapy.
It would be nice if they did tho.

Toyota's focus for this engine is "adequate" power with "sufficient" reliability. I'm actually more surprised they ever warrantied the SC.

"What's a Toyota?" Head of the dual VVT-I 1GR was a prior head of GM's drive train development. Now that same coded yet different engine, unbeknownst to Toyota Japan until recently, is weaker than either of its prior iterations, despite making more power out of the gate. Coincidence??? o_O Nah.....

I like the comment that the a representative from Toyota said about the reason they decided to stick with drums over rear disks. "We just haven't heard that kind of feedback from the community." They haven't heard that people complain about silt and sand staying in the drums and wearing the shoes out long before they should?O_O Seriously?!?! It cannot easily come out and acts like sand paper while in there.

Have to agree with you there. Seems like toyota is locking down their motors pretty well. They don't leave much head room for tuning on the newer stuff or take to kindly to third party tuning.

Alright. So there was a little mix up with the size piston that I wanted. They hadn't finished machining them completely, but their diameter was finished. Anyway, at no cost to myself, the correct diameter was was given and those are now a "rush" order. The first set was waiting on verification for compression, and that's when I was called. This set should be finished by the end if next week. All things right.

    3.800" & 9.0:1 compression.

Sweet! Question though; Toyota says the 1GR isn't able to be bored out. I'm guessing you're sleaving the bores?

Correct, both of my engines at the machine shop have Darton ductile iron sleeves. The non stroker engine is being over bored from 3.701" to 3.800". Huge, in machining terms.

You actually can bore out the OEM cylinders. Just very little.

You think the engine will hold up being that over bored? What exactly is your goal with this motor? haha

Thought so. Just asked because I saw they are saying the same for the 2GR-FKE. You use any friction reduction coating on your cylinder/piston?
Go big or go home :notsure:

If you properly sleeve it, you can go pretty far. The limit is pretty much the cooling channels.

The 2GR-FKE actually has very thin wall and they use a cast iron sleeve to get away with it.
