Looking forward to pics of the BRZ LS swap.

 

I already had the block sleeved and had JE pistons (stock bore and compression), crower rods, and new Toyota crank. I brought them everything I had including the heads to build the complete engine. It’s will probably be easiest to list everything so here goes

Block:

My eyes are old & bad, I can’t see where it says “Made in China” can anyone else? Oh, maybe it’s written on the top?

I snagged one photo. This is of our first test fit. Had to pull it and trim some small sections on the transmission.



There are some spacers between the subframe and chassis. I'm going to remake those as flat bar, and maybe go from 1/4" currently, to 3/8". That little bit is necessary to help with transmission linkage clearing under the tunnel. Spacing the transmission bracket to its supports is necessary, or the transmission tunnel will have to be cut a good deal. I already trimmed an inch out of it, and don't want to cut anymore.

Need to relocate the wiring harness on the driver side. Just a little, for clearance behind the head. The wiring had a hard plastic shield that holds it in place. It's current location prevents the engine from scooting back the last ~3/8" needed to get the engine mounts to line up, and transmission bolt holes. There is a wire loom stud on the passenger side that also need to the trimmed off.

So we'll pull it one more time to make those adjustments, and install the alternator. Then it is going in for what should be the last time. The owner is very excited!

 

Could nearly run the engine without oil.

What size bore are you going with?

 

Everything that I have seen that they've machined and fabricated, is very good quality. Fitment for the headers is very tight, but that is the nature of the beast. It is a much larger engine, and the bracing of the chassis is as such to make it as sturdy as possible.
It is always easy to nitpick after the fact, of what someone else made. Except that is coming from hindsight, and not from the development standpoint. There are minimal factors involved from the business standpoint, versus simply, " I would have done this like this."

I do the same thing. We all do. Otherwise we wouldn't do mods from what Toyota even made.

Making those spacer a 1/8" thicker than their spacers, will allow a little more wiggle room. Instead of 4 round spacers, which is fairly normal, the flat bar will distribute the stresses more evenly. My assumption is that the steering linkage has enough room/slack. It looks like it should.

@Torspd I was going a through a box today and found the dowel pins shown in the pic (brand new in the Toyota parts bag 2 of each), that I cannot figure out where they go. Do these look familiar to you?

 

Who disassembled your engine? You or MotoIQ?

Those dowels could for the block to head, or could be for the block to transmission.

 

I did the disassembly years ago, and at the time I was ordering new Toyota parts and hardware. I was going through boxes recently and ran into these pins. My best guess is I must have ordered a part number from the wrong engine diagram. Otherwise I have no idea.

Made a few tacks on the turbo manifold for my engine. Only had a few minutes to work on that, as I needed to get to work on the BRZ swap. No photos, but I'll get some today after I fuse that gap together.

Pulled the engine/transmission out of the BRZ. Dropped the sub-frame and took some measuments where the bolts go through the subframe into the chassis. As well as the rear sub-frame braces to the chassis, which also are the tie mounting points for the sway bar. Made some cardboard templates. Then ended up qith these. In the rush that I was in, I only managed photos of the rear sub spacers, and not the longer sub-frame spacers.

Not bad for a cut-off wheel, belt sander, and cardboard. The original spacers were just round and 1/4" thick. These cover a larger area for improved load distribution, and are 3/8" thick.

Nothing worthy to post on the BRZ. Just some tedious punch list things, to prep for the engine to go back in tomorrow.

I finished this prior to heading down there. Will get some more done on it tomorrow. Two projects at the same time is time

 

Looking good! Are you going to route the crossover pipe around the front or through the factory location.

 

In the factory location. I'll have that finished up in the next few days. Or at least that is my hope.

 

You put an LS in your Tacoma? If I do another engine swap I'm pretty sure I am going to put an LS into the Tacoma. Does someone already make an LS wiring harness for Tacomas or did you have to wire everything manually?
