Truck's starting to put in a lot more work. These updates will help keep it going strong.

My most recent road trip, I managed 17 mpg. Plenty of room for improvement in the tune.

May I ask, with your awesome fabrication skills & abilities plus you already have a Tremec why not LS swap (fairly cheap) then boost the LS? Or even a 1-UZ or one of Toyota’s best engines 2-UZ. I’m pretty sure you gone through the 1-GR a few times and that can’t be cheap. The Toyota 2UR-GSE would be sweet but might be a bit pricey and not so easy to find. Just asking not trying to start anything. You seem like a gentleman who likes a challenge…
I only wish I had some of your skills and talent. I’m only just fair at changing parts and that’s sometimes iffy at best.

.....but I would wager that his build philosophy is similar to the Apple Computer ad campaign from back in the mid to late 90s.

Thank you for the compliments! My goal was my truck. That includes the heart of the truck. Swapping in an engine is never as easy a path, except for on platforms that have had it done countless times, and have support for such an undertaking. You are well aware of the costs associated with that, in your current predicament, and this is almost 2 decades since the 2nd gen came out.

My undertaking was to see what I could do with this platform and engine. Not what others wanted me to do. That desire made acquaintances, knowledge, friends, and in large part helped open the doors to a lot of the performance parts for this 1GR platform.

I chose this path of resistance because I was dedicating to forging my own path of exploration and discovery.

I've been curious about this for so long. Let us know how well it actually works. What color tungstens do you run? Curious how the different ones react.

 

@Speedytech7 , well the time finally came to be able to update my Haltech software, so that I could do something that you shared some odd months ago. As of this past Wednesday, I updated the Nexus software to the latest version to be able to use the Map Prediction Fuel Film Model.

Wholly smokes is the truck driving in a much smoother manner than ever before. Thanks to you, I learned about it, so just wanted to thank you.

Still needs a other areas finessed, but this is the closest that the truck has ever felt to OEM.

The other night, I was updating some of the long term learning tables, on the Nexus software.

While I was in there, I wanted to see what changing the intake camshafts phase angles would do, in the low rpm section. To see if I could make the engine have a little more low end grunt.

While looking at the real-time graphs of intake cam1 and intake cam2, versus target, I noticed something not right. Should have grabbed a photo or video.

When I had the problem with the aftermarket oil control valves, and swapped in the OEM OCV's, the problem went away, and I could see them following the target. Got some data from @BassAckwards and entered it. I could watch them following more closely.

This time however, intake cam1 was not budging. Bad wiring, bad OCV, I am not sure. I am sure that the OCV is quite old though. Probably been dropped a dozen times and maybe even fried during testing years ago. Who knows.

Interesting enough, except for the slightest odd stumble at ~1500 rpms, I didn't even know there was a problem, and that the engine was only phasing one bank. That's how "good" it is running. Got to do some testing and figure out what the exact cause is, but I am anxious to see how much better it can be running.

This last weekend was an incredibly busy one. Glad to have the companionship and help of @Lucario Runner. We started off the weekend by making some Nuka Cola, from Fallout. It is quite good. Even better when made with some complementing Bumbu rum. Some slight modifications to the recipie, and I think it would be perfect. It's just plain fun to bring the imagination to life.

This is the syrup.




Three vehicles to work on, we had out work cut out for us. His truck and both of mine. The Bimmer was first on my list, as it had developed a heater hose coolant leak.

Trying to take the intake manifold off of the E36, really makes me appreciate how simple it is to remove the same from the Tacoma. The BMW is a Driver's machine, Not a wrencher's machine.

I had purchased 3 of the 4 hoses ahead of time. One was on back-order. It must be noted the popularity of the vehicle because we were able to find an OE equivalent at an auto parts store, for a 27 year old Euro car.





All of those replaced and the car running well, the next mod was the carrier bearing support replacement. The car had a terrible driveline wobble under heavy acceleration. The support was split.



Made a few cuts to take off the old housing, and free up the bearing. The new replacement clamps over. Ingenious design.

 

Having that all finished, the next task was swapping in the steering rack bushings on the Tacoma, for the Energy Suspension bushings. That is not the easiest task even for us seasoned mechanics.

I could do it much quicker a 2nd go around, but what a chore with was. If I still had the front drive train, it would have been a different and longer project. I didn't get a lot of photos because there are plenty on the forum.

Thank goodness for the air hammer with chisel bits, die grinder with burr bits, and a heat gun. The heat gun made it absolutely a breeze to get the bushings out. Once those are out however, the outer sleeve that it pressed into the rack, has to come out. Air hammer made pretty eary work of those.







To have room to move the rack around to work on, meant that the driver side bolt needed to be shorted. This is how far I cut it. Compared to the passenger side, which was left alone.





I never removed the tie rod ends, so with my paint mark on the steering shaft, it was very easy to re-align in the proper orientation.

Willing to share the secret recipe to the nuka cola? Looks like cinnamon, star anise and coriander. Are those mini bay leaves?

That's a slick looking carrier bearing. Solid, but more comfortable than a hard mounted pillow block bearing.

 

I am super happy with the carrier bearing assembly. Splits in half, and has replaceable variable durometer inserts.

Star Anise, Corriander, Cardamom, cinnamon sticks, browning sauce, sugar. We used turbinado sugar, instead of white sugar. In the next iteration I'd use a caramel instead of the browning sauce.

We looked up a recipie online, and it had all of the measurements.

Also, only use half of the star anise, as its flavor is overwhelming.
