TorzaTop vs Undercover

I've been thinking about getting a bed cover this summer and I have it down to Advantage TorzaTop and Undercover.

At first, I was dead set on getting Torza with Pop N' Lock. I kept reading about Pop N' Lock failures and now I'm a bit more hesitant. Undercover became a more attractive option since I can get the security of a locking tailgate without having to install a lock on it.

It really pisses me off that Toyota did not put a lock in the tailgate from factory. You'd think $30k truck would come with something to lock the tailgate with.

Torza's advantage is obviously the price and ease of removal. You can remove it on the go if you find the need to haul something big. However, it does not provide security since anyone can pop the tailgate and take it off. If I can get this problem resolved without risking pop n' lock failure, it'd surely be a no-brainer.

I searched many threads but could not find much info on the Undercover installation. Do you have to strip the Tacoma railing at all? How does it go on excatly? Does anyone have step-by-step instructions? Does it come with all necessary pieces for Tacoma's beds?

Also, I understand that Torza Top requries you to install some metal pieces in the railings. Does it come with the order or do you have to get them seperately?

Please feel free to let me know any problems you have with either one. Also, let me know of pros/cons and feel free to suggest alternate options.

 

go with the undercover, I had one on my 07 it took only 45 mins to install all hardware cam with it, u do have to take off rail cleats.

 

I have the Torza and love it. As far as the metal pieces, I got none with mine when I got it last summer, I just clamp it to the bed rail system and it's worked fine and doesn't move. I do know what you're talking about though as I've seen them on most others.

I went with this cover mainly for ease of install. Goes on or off in literally a minute by one person.

Undercover ftw. Installation is a breeze. I can snap some photos tonight if you wish of the mounting brackets. The mounts slide in the bed rails (just a little cut up piece of metal that goes in). Put your bracket over that, bolt it into the slider. You move it along the rail to adjust the cover position. The gas struts go on the same way. As said above, you need to take the cleats out of the side rails (the ones against the cab are fine). If you want, you can add some mini-cleates (see dealer or trdparts4u.com) in the side bed along with the cover.

You can take the undercover on and off in under 1 minute. I kid you not, but you do really need 2 people for it (unless your massive, I'm 5'10"). It's pretty light about 40lbs or so, they give you mounting hooks for your garage to hang it on if you want though I just lean it against the wall. It's strong as hell, I walk on it all the time (i'm around 260lb). Now they have a single lock option instead of the doubles that mine has... that's all the better. The only thing with taking the cover off is the brackets are still in the bed.. and taking them off (while easy) is a pita to re-adjust to get it flush every time. So if you wanna pop to put cleats in real quick... it's not that easy for that.

Are you talking about the soft tonneaus?

I have the Advantage... (tri-fold soft).

There are 4 alluminum brackets that slide into your rail system. This is what they look like (on the soft tonneau version anyway)



Couldn't be happier with this. Comes on/off in a brease. Love it!

Yeah, that's what the clamps (as seen in pict) clamp onto.

Still wonder why mine didn't come with the brackets. Maybe my clams are slightly different too.

 

I've had the Undercover for a year. Works great. I can take it off in a minute myself. The tonneau is durable, can support plenty of snow and ice, and is very sturdy.

 

Mine is a couple years old...so maybe they changed it since? I'm not sure....

 

My clamps do look a little different upon looking at them more. Regardless, great cover and I've been happy.

After much debate, I decided to go with TorzaTop simply due to the cost and ease of install/removal. I don't plan on having my bed covered unless I go on a trip with more than 1 person and needs to be able to put luggage in the bed without it getting wet.

I also liked the fact that I can take it off entirely on the go and toss it in the cab if I randomly find a good deal on a large item. Still kind of iffy on pop n' lock but at least I figure people won't try to steal something they can't see.

To put the cleats in quickly, just loosen the screw almost all the way, and put it up to the rail perpendicular to the rail, then push in and turn to parallel to the rail, mission complete!
