Great post! Love the pictures. It's remarkable what a stock Tacoma can do with sliders. I'm now going to plan an expedition to Utah starting tomorrow.

FYI, One of Japanese Engineers / architects of the FJ ran the Rubicon in a stock FJ with sliders a number of years ago. I recall this from some Toyota literature a few years ago.

hey pugga! jackman maine. been there, done that. bridges out, skidder ruts, ice covered water holes that break through while crossing, gutters where drainage pipes were ripped out, ice, deep snow, flooded roads from beaver dams, crossing small flooded streams, avoiding moose on 201. damm-love them north main woods. had to use some sense though. 635 mi. away from home. our guys took several 200# buck out of the jackman area. weighed at bishops store.always good to come back with a critter or two,and not have the truck damaged. oops! almost forgot the biggest hazzard, logging trucks on the haul roads, they have the right of way. I don't care if he's in the middle of the road or on your side, get out of his way.that can get tricky on snow covered roads with drainage ditches on the side,or while approaching one lane bridges.

    Just the basics
What do we mean by stock? I do have sliders but no suspension upgrades.

Berdoo, Death Valley (Numerous trails), Panamints, Sierras, Inyos, and the central coast. In the past two years the Gini has been all over. I think Dedeckera Canyon was one of the worst. Lippencott has some tight areas but the views are amazing. Damn now I'm missing DV.

Heading to Canyonlands next month, fingers crossed the White Rim is repaired by then.

Crom, I'm jealous. I want to see a bighorn and have yet to spot one.

    Wow!!!
Toyota should pay you for that one. Those stairs/steps/ledges you took on would have me wound tight. Sphincter factor of the Nth degree.

I've done a ton of trails rated 3-4 around Colorado. Here's a few of the harder ones I remember:
McAllister Gulch and Ptarmigan Pass near Shrine Pass.
Bill Moore Lake and Barbour Fork in the Front Range.

I love the old pick up, but I think I'll be getting a 2012 Dbl Cab Off Road real soon. I could use some AC, more power for the passes and more space for dogs/people in the cab. Hopefully the '12 doesnt' turn out to be too big for my liking.

It's an 89 Toyota Pickup. I got some stuff done to it.. FJ axles going under it soon.
I did a mudbog in my 99' Tacoma 2wd 5/6 drop...friends were having problems getting their diesels stuck and shit. I just held it almost wide open 2nd gear and floated it all..and picked up about 45lbs of mud on my truck :spy:

I do this route in a Chevy Colorado. You should check it out again sometime if you get a chance. One of the storms we had a while back did a number on it.

    Gregero,

I grew up in El Cajon. That looks like a fun trail. I used to take my truck off roading in the Laguna Mountains and in In Ko Pah as well as the desert. Those were probably the worst places I took my truck. Same thing with the Lake Moreno trail too. IfI ever get out that way, can you give me directions to this trail you went on?

Here are some pics of the In Ko Pah trail in my old truck from several years ago. I think in 99' is when these were taken. I also boughtthat truck at Toyota of El Cajon as well.

Yep, that was the same place we went several times! Man, now I am homesick! I want to take my current Tacoma there so bad.

On a side note, back in high school, somewhere around Pine Valley, some friends and I went off roading to some old abandoned silver mines. I remember we had to cross a deep creek and follow some pretty decent trails to get there. Then we had to climb one hill that seemed like it was almost straight up. I didn't drive on that one and only road as a passenger in the back of my friends truck but I have been trying to find that place ever since I went to it in Dec. of 92'.

I lifted my truck at 60k and have owned it since there was only 1 digit on the odometer...The only mods I did to it before the lift were a skidplate, AT tires, and the rear diff breather. Here's a rough list of the trails I have done in it stock:

    Colorado:
    - Black Bear Pass (twice)
    - Imogene Pass
    - Engineer Pass
    - California/Hurricane Pass
    - Poughkeepsie Gulch
    - Taylor Pass/Reno Divide
    - Pearl Pass
    - Mt. Antero
    - Tincup Pass (gets worse every year)
    - Medano Pass
    - Hayden Pass

    California:
    - Coyote Flats
    - Baker Creek Meadow
    - Brewer Lake

Also numerous unnamed trails but these are the more popular ones. These trucks will do much better than you think they will. In my experience, 99% of the time, the driver is the limiting factor. Lifts are cool but you don't really need one - just tires, armor, and driver experience.

I'll buy most of that except in cases where the experience won't give you that 2 or 3" of clearance to need to complete an obstacle...;)
