Able to tow and able to tow safely and comfortably in all conditions are two different things.

So what truck do you have, and how is it rigged for towing?

How experienced are you at towing?

What would your normal towing conditions be like?

Is the wt you mentioned dry/empty or wet/loaded? I assume dry.

When you say the 'dealer said', is that the dealer selling the trailer, or the dealer you bought the truck from?

Just because something falls under the wt rating of the tow vehicle doesn't mean it's a dream tow.

First blush says that while the wt may be ok, the bulk would be a killer. That's a pretty long trailer. And I assume it's fairly high? Acting like a parachute behind the truck...........

I would be hesitant to tow a trailer that size behind my truck. I used to own a ford f250 diesel and it would pull the trailer you mentioned in half, but i bought that truck specifically to tow. I would suggest looking at a lower profile trailer like a pop-up, or something closer to the 3.5klbs rating that way you have wiggle room to load it down.

just my 2 cents. Good luck!

If you plan on towing it long distances then a larger truck would make it much easier.

So, just remember, he gets paid when you buy.

Your ultimate satisfaction with the purchase isn't part of his career plan.

If you are going to tow that long travel trailer, invest in anti sway bars linking the trailer to the truck. That length it becomes very easy for the tail to wag the dog, depending on how the trailer is loaded, and its very frightening if you ever have that happen to you. I'd say for two or three trips a year on flat terrain, and you're okay with the slow acceleration etc. it will work, but if you plan to tow that through mountain passes, you would be far better off with a smaller trailer, or a better tow vehicle.

Can the truck tow that - yes
Will you enjoy towing, and be comfortable - no

I'd look at a minimum of a Tundra/1500 to tow something that size.

Bill is spot on . Way to much trailer for these trucks. It can do it bit not as well as a full-ize truck

You have 1500 -2000 lbs of weight to add before breaking the bank. Not much after you include water, gear, people and fuel. Also add the extra difference in weight you added to your truck since it was stock - any new wheels and tires, sliders, skids and bumpers, winch, rack or cap?

Can you trade back for a Tundra? I try to keep my weight around 4500-5000 lbs max, and even that uses gas like a V10 so I double my fuel capacity by carrying 15gals extra - a lot of extra weight!

I've towed 6400 lb many times. I would never tow close to that with the Tacoma. 4K would be my limit and that's everything including passengers and fuel.

As have I. It isn't something I'd want to do on a regular basis for sure.

Op fwiw I was looking at the forest river wolf pup 18to. Decent sized for my family of 3 plus the dog, and I think it was like 3700lbs. Might be easier to enjoy the camping trip if you don't have to white knuckle it the whole way there.

Have to agree with everyone else on this......thats empty weight...what is the total weight going to be once you add passengers/cargo/full tank etc etc....if your just going across the city once or twice and you take it easy maybe but for prolonged use then yes go with a bigger ride.

Sometimes, I think people are just overly conservative. You could probably tow it fine, but you will probably want to take every precaution you can to do it safely..... trailer brakes, mirror extensions, weight distribution hitch, drive slow.... etc. Spend a good amount of time learning before you're doing. Check out the 3rd Gen Tow thread too.

But everyone is right, it'll be easier with a bigger truck.

That weight and length behind a Tacoma is getting to the territory of "you had better know how to tow." Not a good place to learn.

I agree. I just feel that in general, there is too much "Oh you can never make that work!" when people ask for advice.

I've been getting irritated when someone asks a question about how to do something and you get 45 answers about how not to do whatever the OP asked. Maybe I've been online too long.

It will tow it no problem as long as you have proper tongue weight.
