say you have a 2017 Tacoma Trd sport with an Origonal purchase price of 36xxx (before taxes/fees) that currently has 28k miles on it and Toyota is offering to buy it back. Do you think a deduction of 8k is reasonable for the mile count?

Nope! In my neck of the woods (Oregon) you will see 17’s with similar miles listed for $34K or even more.

Is Toyota offering to buy it back. Or did the dealership call wanting to buy your truck and sell you another new vehicle?

I would take the current KBB value - purchase price before taxes and fees. Then add in the taxes and fees on the original purchase.
That should be the buy back amount. You should be refunded original taxes and fees back. You should not have to foot that bill in a buyout.

Now buyout meaning its being bought back because its a lemon, NOT for a trade in or resale.

    No?

What are the comparable Tacos listed for in your area? In this area, I see seven 2017 Sports listed, ranging between $30k and $36k. Some stock, some modded.

The dealer tried to pull that crap with me. I declined .. I can private sell for a lot more than what they are offering. I know I can private sell next year for the same price they offered me. Probably a grand more lol

WA State lemon law uses a calculation of (Purchase Price x Mileage)/120,000. That comes to $8,400 in your case. That is the calculation that Ford used to buy back my sister's Raptor.

Obviously that could vary state to state.

I live in Mass and this would be a Toyota corporate buyback. The truck is prestine.

If the truck is pristine, why would they offer to buy it back?

I mean prestine as in I’ve taken care of it it’s had multiple issues beyond my control.

$8K off is what I am seeing for salvage title prices.

Whoa. I'm thankful to have never needed to go that route. The only problem is that the equation doesn't make sense? Plug in something low, like 100mi, and the value comes back close to nil. Could that be the deduction from the purchase price:

    Buy Back = Purchase Price - (Purchase Price x Mileage)/120,000 ?

Once again, this is WA law, YMMV, if you do NOT go through lemon arbitration you are not entitled to Sales tax/fees being refunded in any way. The dealer is simply buying the vehicle back.

Sorry, yes, that calculation comes up with the DEDUCTION amount, not the buyback :)

Ok, so not pristine, it's pretty much a lemon. Meaning that sure, you could sell it for more on Craigslist but I'd find that to be pretty immoral myself, lol.

Gonna be honest with you, they plan on selling it for about $2k less than what you bought it new for. I just had this conversation with a sales guy at my local dealer. These things depreciate SLOWLY. Only reason I bought new was because used was just a couple grand cheaper. Made more sense

Any Tacoma here that is a 17’ or even 18’ is damn near new cost. Very little depreciation, even other makes hold pretty well with the truck demand.

Correct. But after getting back taxes fees etc it would probabaly be a wash in a private sale. I just feel 8k is agressive for a. 18 month old truck with 28k
