    I heard that Toyota will not cover an engine problem under warranty if a toyota filter was not used. The anti drain back technology is very important in their eyes.

    The magnuson moss act prevents them from dsoing this. They cannot deny warranty coverage, unless the filter is proven to be the cause of the issue. You can use whatever filter you like.

    A friend of mine cut the tops off and compared about 10 different filters including the K&N, Bosch, Mobil1.

    I cant remember the specifics but I do remember that the Toyota one was better than almost all of them. Only a couple were comparable but they were triple or more in price.

    I only use Toyota Filters. Period.

    Funny, That is the same one I use. Fram 3600 which may still have the same amount of SQ inches, but it is still a fram and most likely made out of the same crap. I guess I will be going back to Toyota filters.

    I was going to switch to these a couple years ago, but couldn't get past the price. As mentioned earlier in this thread, I think these are the same filters put on at the factory. We need someone with a truck that hasn't had its first change to verify. Dealer did my first three for free, so I never checked/noticed.

    yes, quite pricey. Also obviously a superior filter.

    As the other guy posted photos of his original filter, and then the dealer replacement filter, and now we see this cutaway showing possible bogus parts.

    FWIW, my 2010 4.0 had from new the Denso brand orange gasket version. Did not open it to see the media color, but it was Denso, and had the clover base plate and orange gasket.

    First oil change the dealer sold me the black gasketed type filter. Last oil change I opted in and special ordered the TRD filter.

    Not sure what's up with the non Denso oem stuff, but it is interesting if we find out.

    Ya I wonder why they are so different. You would think a Toyota filter is a Toyota filter. The one with the orange gasket looks like a whole different design. I said it before, The dealer did my 1st oil change, so I have no idea if thats what I had from the factory. It almost looks like a thicker media on the orange. I wonder if that is just toyota extra protecting a new engine. Maybe specially during break in period. Just a guess. Is the TRD filter alot different?

    You can also use a ph16, that's what dodges use, caravans and other pos dodges. Its short and fat, not sure about the coverage or sq in. might be same? Different?

    It cost more, about a buck a month for the amount the truck is driven when compared to a non TRD Toyota filter from the dealer.

    Honestly, I didn't look that close, just gave it the normal shake to ensure nothing is loose, looked inside for metal or debris, installed and put into service.

    Oil change should be around April, if no one posts by then I'll open it up for a look.
