    I tested the filters that were considered "OEM replacements". If its not lited as an OEM replacement, it wasnt tested.

    X2. Toyota is rare in that the OEM parts are not outrageously priced too. My uncle works at Toyota so I get the oil and air filter for around $15

    Thank you for this thread.

    I watched all the videos and will be changing to only using Toyota filters on my truck. I had a fram fail :( Pretty embarrassed, but I'm new to having a nice truck. At least it's been getting the oil changed on time consistently.

    Time to go looking for threads that compare the various kinds of oil. Later this summer I may do some of the tune ups listed for improving mileage.

    PS. This thread could be mentioned under the page for new members with "threads you may want to view when joining tacoma world".

    PPS. Is the toyota filter for the first Gen also a cut above the rest? I have a 2003 and am working on what kind of filter it should be using for the next decade.

    I have a rare OEM toyota filter from Japan, I'll see if i can post a pic later here. its hard to get and expensive... It was like $12 a believe. Its not made of paper! Its a like a sponge type cotton filter! I special order it from a dealer in va a long time ago!

    Mine are not paper either. I dont think, it sure looks cotton like. But mine is 1st gen too

    Given its cost, I have to ask what makes it BETTER than OEM Toyota/Denso filters made elsewhere? :confused: According to Chris (http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/te...made-thailand-vs-competition.html#post2389585), they're made with some type of synthetic fiber media rather than paper.

    cause denso japan is quality stuff... I would think the synthetic sponge fiber will do better cleaning/obsorbing then paper no?

    The Denso Thailand filter media isn't paper, but some kind of synthetic sheet. As to which is better, the Japanese "sponge" filter may be more restrictive, causing more oil bypass at startup, etc.

    BTW, be careful of filters that use a wire mesh to give the filter element integrity when wet (this includes the TRD filter). Mfg defects can cause slivers of wire to come loose and get into the engine. See: http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/engine-performance/66529-trd-filter-metal-inside.html

    My friends and I have discussed the sponge vs. standard type media, and agree it could be more restrictive. Also.......the synthetic media is designed more like a net to capture the impurities whereas the sponge has "passages" that dirt could pass thru.

    I just got off the phone with two toyota dealerships. The first one was only mildly helpful, and I have no intent to purchase anything from them.

    The later was able to confirm by memory (apparently he owns a tacoma also) that these filters are interchangeable, and he recommends using the D3 over the G1 because the D3 is larger and contains more media. Originally the G1s were being put on the 4 cyl and the D3 on the larger, but there was no reason not to use the larger one since it would fit and provided you more for your money. Reiterated that their stance is to change their filter and oil together at 5000 miles. Currently w/ my POS fram I've been changing that oil out every 3k--but I was dumb enough to trust the package and leave the cheap filter on. Wish it wasn't such a large pack though. I just don't want to store extras. Too bad my wife's rav4 uses a different filter.
