Well that's the last time I spend $14 on a K&N Oil filter. I'll stick with $4 and get a much better filter from Toyota. I'm assuming buying them bulk from ebay or something will get you an even better price. Nice post brother.

Too much to list, but enough to get me in trouble. Repeatedly.
While I don't have the money or time to be deconstructing filters just so I can compare the internals, I can say that it looks as though Mobil 1 makes a filter that fits our trucks, that is twice the size of the one listed for our trucks.

Mobil 1's part number for our trucks is 102. After seeing its miniscule size, I took the liberty of looking through some of the boxes of filters on the shelf at my local Pep Boys, looking specifically at the taller ones to see if there maybe wasn't one that would work. I lucked out, in that the second box I opened appeared to be an identical filter that was quite a bit taller. Number 209 is the one I found.

Before trying it out on my truck for its very first oil change (literally its first oil change. 3,028 miles on the clock), you damn well better believe I was going to make sure it was going to work. I looked the listed Mobil 1 102 and the larger Mobil 1 209 over very carefully, looking for even the slightest difference. The only thing I could see was the height. The internals were identical, and the base even had the exact same factory stamp on it ("AA").

It has now been residing on my truck for 100 miles without incident. At 50 miles, it went to the dealer for an unrelated oil-in-coolant issue (which they tried to tell me was mud or dirt  ); they didn't seem to notice/care about the filter that was on there, even after some prodding.

Check out the pics below to see a comparison (taken in the store, with the old Yota filter still draining oil, is why it's upside-down).

The right, shorter filter is the recommended Mobil 1 filter listed for our trucks. The middle, taller filter is the one I'm posting about. The base pics match the body pics (right = short, middle = tall, left = Yota). Note the bases are the same for both Mobil 1 filters.

This new option should open up some discussion about surface area, as I suspect the larger Mobil 1 209 filter has more filtering surface area than even the Yota filter.

    Discuss.

The comparo I did was between recomended replacement filters. There are many that are larger/wider that fit the Tacoma.

    Wow good write up.

But Fram has the cool rubber grip,LOL. I will not use Fram on anything. I always use the factory filter if it's not available i'll just order the Denso online. I did attempt to use the WIX but returned it since it was so much shorter than the factory one.

Photo shows 209, not 204, in case someone runs off with the PN to order it. :p

There is more to filter compatibility than just fit. The bypass valve cracking pressure is also important. If the bypass valve on the 3rd-party filter is set too high, it can potentially cause oil starvation.

The synopsis is just stick with Toyota filters?

So I worked at a dealership for like 6 years untill recently. The guys at toyota parts are good friends of mine. One day I went in to grab an oil filter my my 91 22re pickup that I always put d3's on. They handed me a 15600-41010 filter and said that it fits. Its originally from the fj 40, and it takes a quart just to fill the filter. You should tear one of those apart. also the filter cross references over to a PH8A, hp3001, and so on. I just bought a 2004 2.7l tacoma prerunner and i am going to try to get that filter to fit. anyone know if it will?

damnit autozone . i normally buy wix and always have but autozone didnt have it so i got the tough guard. i wish companies actually produced what they said the product was. well , then we would have a perfect world huh. I am going to do an oil change then switch back to either a wix, toyota, royal purple or amsoil. i noticed my truck has a little rattle since ive changed my oil with the fram guard.. wonder if thats the problem

Old reply but worth commenting on...

The M1-204 may be taller than the M1-102, but that does not mean that there is a difference in the filtering element.
This is the case with a lot of the fabled Amsoil EO filters... they use the same very short (Wix) element in multiple cans.

    BTW: http://www.partswebsite.com/1sttoyo...tid=10020&subcatid=20099&section=1&type=parts

Buy in quantity, spreads the shipping cost over more filters. I bought 20 filters (10 for the Taco and 10 for the wife's Rav4) for $88 shipped.
Unit price is $3.89, so that was $77.80 for the filters. $9 is their minimum shipping charge so that's a constant... get together with some friends if you don't want 20 or more filters.
