Are you talking about the Denso aftermarket "blue" filters? Dissection info is available on the web. What I posted earlier:

Alright. I'm slightly confused on these OEM Toyota oil filters.
I'm here at the dealer waiting for my Tacoma V6 to get serviced so while waiting I went over to the parts and quote for my Tacoma oil filter. It's about $5 for 90915-YZZG1, though I request if they have 90915-20004 or 90915-YZZD3 (pretty sure these are interchangeable), so the parts guy said they don't fit & he never heard of 90915-20004.

So my question & just want to reconfirm if these are interchangeable.

-20004 is the factory-fitted filter not commonly available at the parts counter and not necessarily appropriate for field use (due to possibly higher pressure drop). G1 is for 2.7L. D3 is for 4.0L.

My cousin pointed me to this thread after a conversation where I told him I only use the TRD filter on my FJ Cruiser. (120K miles on it now)

I wonder now if the TRD filter which looks a lot like the K&N is any good?

This is the filter I buy:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0041S1EE8/ref=ox_ya_os_product

This thread has me thinking I need to switch back to OEM Toyota Filters but I have to wonder why Toyota would put their TRD and Toyota name on a rebranded K&N. Especially the TRD where you would assume it is a step up, not down.

hopefully their oil filters are better than their air filters because my K&N let everything pass through it

on a good note at least the "trd" is less expensive than a K&N branded filter

The K&N oil filter has nothing in common with the K&N air filter.

The K&N oil filter is made by Champion Labs on the same production line with the Mobil-1 filter.
They are very good filters, however, $14 for the K&N, $12 for the Mobil-1, and $4 for the OEM Toyota... it's a no-brainer. Even the Purolator Pure-One at $6 is just as good as the K&N.

Working at a Toyota Dealership, I have seen many of the these filters on Tacoma's (people doing the oil changes elsewhere or by themselves) and I have seen many aftermarket filters have their gaskets sticking behind (maybe they weren't lubricated). Haven't have one stick behind on the Genuine Toyota filters after doing hundreds and hundreds of Toyotas. Another observation when doing oil changes on off brand (could be VW, GM, Ford... we use aftermarket in that instance) trade ins I have seen on several occasion miscut treads on the aftermarket filters, again not one problem installing a Toyota filter. The best part, They come pre-lubricated, remove the seal and apply!
On a side note the Mobil 1 / K&N is my second choice from having good experiences with them but the price for them in Canada is ridiculous I could buy 2-3 Toyota filters for the price of 1 of them.

    Agreed
In fairness, I've only had two gaskets stick in the last 40 years. One on my motorcycle (it was actually a Mobil-1 filter), and one on my Tundra (old AC Delco Gold filter, which was also a Champion premium... same as the M1/K&N).
But the gasket sticking doesn't bother me, it won't be a problem as long as you wipe the seat.

Except the superchargers, most TRD parts are just rebranded 3rd-party aftermarket parts that Toyota has checked for fit and function. ;)

This factory-modified X-Runner for SEMA still uses the stock oil filter:

Great info in here, Thanks Chris! I posted something on our local offroad FB page after walking thru the Toyota dealer I sell cars at and seeing a Tacoma with the engine pulled. The mech. told me it was there because he used a fram oil filter on it! With only 4,500 miles on the engine that motor needed a rebuild because of oil starvation! The customer liked to do his oil changes every 3k mi. He should have seen this thread first!

So that happened after only 1500 miles on a Fram?

Sorry... that may be what the customer told the tech, but as crappy as Fram oil filters are, it didn't cause that. Customer either forgot to replace the oil, then put it in before having the truck towed in, or downshifted at high speed.

Yeah, I'm guessing he forgot to put in the oil.

I don't think the Fram filter did that damage either. They (or someone) was just looking to place blame somewhere. I used the Fram filters for the past 108k miles on my last Tacoma and never had any problems. But I did use oil along with them so I guess that may have helped! :) Not saying maybe somewhere some time ago there was a bad batch but not in this case. Either way, I got a dozen OEM filters for $4 each so I will be using them.

don't know if anyone mentioned it K&N makes Mobile 1 filters. Amsoil makes WIX, and I think Royal Purple filters are the stuff if you can find local stores that sell them. My pick for the money is K&N I've used them and the nut on the end is fantastic. I also get them at cost from a buddy :)

Champion Labs makes K&N and Mobil-1 filters.
Amsoil doesn't make anything. They blend a high quality oil. Wix makes their filters.
RP is nothing special. Not their oil, and not their filters. They aren't bad filters, but they aren't "the stuff".
Great quality filter, but not worth $15.
Not worth $8 when you can get the Toyota OEM filter for $4 and it is actually a better filter.

Good job in taking apart the filters to see what is in side. I viewed another test recently by a private individual who did a similar test (pretty comprehensive) that talked about 6 or so filter brands and his conclusion was the Toyota OEM filter was the best by far. After reviewing his comparisons I believe he is right. The OEM filter from Toyota is larger, has more pleated surface, a well made bypass valve and get this contrary to the cost of OEM items, this filter was under $5.00 compared to others that were up to $10 and more. So, I'm going to buy the OEM filter for my vehicle.

I don't have any affiliation with Toyota and am of the opinion that OEM items are priced way too high, however, this filter is well worth it.[IMG]

Yes I meant to fix the WIX makes Amsoil... i typo'd... RP stuff is great. I've had great success with it. Never tried their filter personally, but they're supposed to be a great filter. Yeah I get the K&N filters for roughly 8.00. I'm actually not worrying about oil or filters for the next 1.5 years since I get the free 2/25K maintenance on the Tacoma, and free 4/45K Maintenance on my Tundra. They're both getting OEM stuff right now.
