Went through all the options and picked out these four. Maybe we can add a poll to this puppy?
    • Diesel #1 Diesel V6 23 MPG 7,500 lbs. 8 sec $ -
    • Diesel #4 Diesel 4-Cylinder 32 MPG 5,000 lbs. 8 sec $ 2,000
    • Gasoline #9 Gasoline V6 25 MPG 7,500 lbs. 7 sec $ 4,000
    • Gasoline #3 Gasoline 4-Cylinder 28 MPG 5,000 lbs. 6 sec $ 4,000

I wonder how tough it would be for them to just use the 3.0 diesel they already use in the hilux. I really think they don't because it wouldn't fly here in the US. People seem to think that everything has to hit 60 in 5 seconds. I like power too but it's a pickup truck... Get it to 60 under 12 seconds or so, cruise easily at 75, and get over 25mpg. Perfect.

Lines 3 and 4 of this say possible turbocharger to me, especially line 4. Maybe a 3.0L-3.3L turbo V6 (though I suppose a direct injected dual VVTI 4.0L could fit that bill), but probably a 2.5L turbo 4. The only way a NA four cyl can tow 5000# and do 0-60 in 6 seconds is if it has pistons the size of paint cans, and it isn't going to get 28 mpg with that.

edit: You know, I just remembered, my Pa filled out one of these Toyota surveys a couple years ago for his Tundra. No one must have wanted a new engine, I guess.

Sounds like you are right, but I think we stand a better chance at a diesel the more time they take with the redesign. Hopefully their will be enough good things said about the diesel Chevy Cruz and the dodge diesel 1500 in the next year or so to really push a diesel Toyota.

Rather see diesel than v8. My old dakota had small v8 and though it could tow, a heavy trailer would make for a rough ride because of the truck size and weight. If you need to tow buy a tundra.

All the more reason to use bio diesel mix has all the certane you need believe the Audi block is iron my VW is, you sure the tanks are not for urea? Audi/VW have used diesels for decades. MB has used iron block diesels for nearly a century. Sprinters have a turbo 3L MB iron block engine I would trade my Tacoma tomorrow if they put some thing like that in a new one.

Diesel won't happen any time soon. I work a lot with Toyota Canada and have had time with a few of the heads of the company. Bottom line is this.......diesel is not subsidized in North America. That's it. Normal fuel as well as the car industry that builds normal fuel cars are highly subsidized by both governments. Therefore there is no need to have a lot of money put into the gasoline itself. The diesel fuel here in North America does not even come close to measuring up to diesel around the world. I own a hilux and a hiace in South America and it pains me that my 4runner up here is gasoline. In order for us to get diesel in our toyotas we have to do 2 things. And this from the head of marketing Toyota canada.....1/literally lobby a complaint with Toyota and make a file number to say you want diesel. The company takes those very seriously. And 2/ lobby the government to subsidize diesel fuel here. It's truly is a shame that we don't have it here. The 15 year old d4 diesel that barely is looked after down south still performs better than a new gas one here. IF we lobby hard enough it may come to fruition here. Volkswagen does it because they are willing to take a loss to test the market in North America. Thery have models in canada that they do not offer in the US. I too wish they would listen to us as consumers because the diesels in the hilux's are wicked! FYI. They sell the tacoma in South America but no one buys it because the hilux is available in diesel and they all look at me like I'm crazy when I say all our toyotas are gasoline. So lets keep bugging them. I only bought my 2014 tacoma because the company told me it will be years before we get diesel here.

I would like 280 hp, 7000 lbs towing capacity, and bit better fuel economy. Or stick the 4 runner engine in it!

Compressed Natural Gas, makes good power, runs real clean, can be adapted to existing gas motor technology, U.S. and Canada has a crap load of it.

To the guys who say diesel won't come here from Toyota well look at ram and Chevy if all goes well Toyota will be forced to soon considering even Nissan is cashing in on the market.

7000lb towing capacity would mean a 7000lb truck. Towing that much weight isn't much of a problem, but stopping it is. I think the argument against diesel is silly. I know a dude that has a right hand drive FJ diesel up here and it runs great on our diesel. There are also many dudes who have done the D4D swap. I think it comes down to emissions.

a 2.5L Turbo 4cyl gas is a great option. I love turbo 4cyl's, they make great power and have great MPG. They also could be tuned for a little more power more easily than any naturally aspirtated engine.

I would imaging the 8/7/6 is the 0-60 time. The current Taco is around 7.7 seconds for a DC auto.

Not to mention here in Canada they can legally import any vehicle after 15 years.

We have a pile of older Toyota Diesels, Delica diesels that run fine.

I don't think that would be entirely true, they could have a redesign with the same engines..

Gut tells me that the Tundra will get a diesel before the Tacoma, which might make a diesel Tacoma even more unlikely-they'd rather sell Tundras. Also, option for the "new" V6 gains very little over the existing V6 - +1000 pounds towing, about a 10-12% mpg gain, hardly a change 0-60 mph for $4000 ?

Of the 4 choices, that leaves the presumably turbo 4 (again $4K) for a 40% mpg gain, 2 seconds 0-60, but a 1500# loss in towing capacity. I'd rather see the FJ engine, and a change in transmission/rear end gearing for a mpg increase (and no extra $x,000 charge).
