I'd just go for a more efficient V6. 25mpg would be great.

Like you I'm looking for the mileage as well. I can tell you the diesels (Toyota's Hilux) I drove overseas were great. Although the 80hp diesels were nothing to write home about but add a turbocharger and I'm sure they would have fit the bill. One thing is for sure though...Toyota keeps all there plans very close to the chest. Can't see their cards at all and what they plan to do...

I agree with you. If they can give me a 6 banger that will get 25mpg or better I'd take a hard look at it. In 2015 I plan to get my new truck and if the technology continues with the 4 cylinders and they can give me the performance I need and when I need it. You can bet I will look very closely at a 4 cyl.

Diesel emissions standards are slightly different in Europe, that's why.

I'm not exactly sure what this whole issue over engines is about, because I'm totally happy with the 4 banger I have right now. :)

And to compensate, rather than solely focusing on the engine itself, I also put my attention on the truck that it powers. You'd be surprised at the 2.7's performance and economy when it's freed up from being encumbered by all of the accessory crap, and when it's properly sized to a standard cab 5 speed manual transmission truck.

we shall see... if its anything like the history of the 4 runner to tacoma updates... if the 4 runner sees a full update in 2017... it will be 2019 before you see the same update in the tacoma.

Id love the 2GR-FSE in a taco... like i have said its the perfect motor for the truck... but only time will tell.

The only problem i see is that its meant to be a transversely mounted motor... so toyota may or may not change it up to be a longitudinal.

I got to have an auto for the Boss. I've always been afraid if I had a stick that I would have a heart attack and the truck would be blocking her car in so she couldn't get me to a hospital. LOL....

If go for a v6 with at least the stats of the 1gr with better fuel economy. Although I'd much rather have a turbo diesel! I don't see that happening anytime soon in US dealerships.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I don't give a shit about the motor. I want at least a 7 speed transmission. 10 speed would be better.

Just put in a two speed rear then you would have 12!

Or double transmissions with a 2 speed rear. Like an old tractor or something.

You've never had 2500lbs of people and gear climbing a muddy 45 degree incline. ATRAC is awesome.

Well, that's another situation entirely that requires a totally different tool to do the job. It's a real testament to Toyota that they make our Tacomas in such a wide variety of configurations, so that you can have just the right tool. Mine's purely a street Taco, although it always carries 600-800 pounds of tools and material for work. But it has plenty of power to take me where I need to go.

    Don't need one, and I don't need a 6.6l engine.

What I'm saying is that a 4.0 in a Diesel would have more than enough torque to tweak the frame of a Taco and would get 30-35mpg without working at it.
Moderate hypermiling techniques could easily push an oil burner into the 40s.
Diesel is typically about 30% more efficient than gasoline. They are much more effective at converting the combustion to usable power rather than wasted heat.

I have to agree with this. The whole reason i got my truck with the 2TR was simplicity/reliability. I had a VW with a turbo and direct injection before the Tacoma, and it had a lot of problems due to this technology (high pressure fuel pump issues, coking on the intake valves, short turbo life, PCV problems, oil consumption, etc.). I wanted an engine with multiport injection to keep the valves clean, no turbo, a timing chain rather than belt, a tough transmission, and overall low maintenance . The 2TR is a great engine and i hope that Toyota continues to offer a simplistic engine option many years down the road when im ready to replace my current '06 4x4. Ill gladly pay a little extra in gas if it means that im not constantly worried that my truck's going to break down on every long trip.

I would finally get to roll coal in my taco if they came out with diesels.

My Magic 8 ball would like to see (realisticly)- Dual VVT-i 4.0L, the current 2.7L but with direct injection. Toyota could introduce a 4cyl turbo diesel in any 2wd application as an in-between to test the market, then could drop with little problems.

I agree that current emissions on diesels have RUINED their mpg. Personally I think there is lots of political/lobbying BS going on there. My biggest suspect would be the corn lobbyist where ethinol is added to gas. If diesel were to gain popularity, they would lose money.

Ruined is a little harsh yes they took a hit but they still have a gas engine beat and all ways will. One of the problems with a diesel is public image and all they have to see is some wing nut with an over fueled Dodge blowing black smoke every where and know diesels are dirty it's some thing you can see. The modern diesels are cleaner than a gas engine but that is not the way the public sees it. GM did not do the diesel powered market any good and people still remember that, slow, dirty unreliable worthless junk and it has taken a long time to regain traction. Ethanol lobby could not care less about the diesels there are too few to worry about right now and they could switch to bio diesel production if necessary. The trucking industry also has a lobby about as big. If any thing it's exports, the US exports more diesel that any one else and they want to keep it that way.

They will, in 2016. That's a year after the Colorado is revealed. Hopefully that will edge Toyota into bringing the diesel here.

"Chevrolet will join the auto industry's timid foray into the world of oil-burning power plants and offer a 2.8-liter straight-six turbodiesel engine a year after the truck's introduction. "
