I did? Your post was about Tacoma pricing over time vs inflation. I think you'd find the curves are similar.

Where's your data on wages over time? Exponential difference between that and truck prices? Though I don't disagree that wages have "stagnated," that stagnation is adjusted for inflation. Adjust the truck for inflation and what happens?

Not to mention, the v6 today is leaps and bounds ahead, performance wise, over the 1st gen v6s. It isn't close to an apples to apples comparison. The pricing is pretty close when comparing to the I4 today.

See this is funny to me because I've owned all three generations of Tacoma and I know first hand how much more bang for your buck you get these days. Lets use some REAL WORLD examples:

My first Tacoma was a 1998 access cab offroad 4x4, originaly MSRP was $26,xxx and there was almost zero discount back then, I think we paid $25k for it (family member bought it first I got it from them 6 years later). Anyways disregarding discounts to keep it equal (I got a much bigger discount on my 2017) $26k in 1998 is worth $38,888 today.

MSRP on my brand new 2017 TRD Offroad 4x4 double cab was $37k, so already its less than it should be just accounting for inflation. Now look at all the extra shit on my 2017 that wasn't on my 1998: 3 times as many airbags, stability control, traction control, trailer sway control, crawl control, touch screens, a camera, about 20 additional computer systems and dozens of additional sensors, twice as many fuel injectors, a high pressure fuel pump, timing chain, variable valve timing, two extra gears, way more complex multi-channel braking system, way nicer audio system, keyless entry, use of high tensil strength alloys that are stronger and more expensive, power sliding window, standard tow pkg, standard hitch, Bluetooth, stearing wheel audio controls, way more sound deadening, acoustic and solar glass, etc etc etc. All of that additional shit costs $$$ so if we actually had to pay for all of that stuff plus the inflation the MSRP should be more like $45k-$50k but its actually still under the raw inflation #! We're essentially getting all of that extra shit for FREE and STILL paying less than inflation. How the fuck do you complain about that?!?!

American's love to bitch about how expensive cars are but they have no idea how good they have it. The USA is the worlds most competitive car market your $ goes farther here than anywhere else in the world and farther than any other time in history (when tech and inflation are taken into account).

Almost all of the stuff you mentioned in your post is "table stakes" when it comes to new vehicles these days--all of which is fairly cheap especially when you consider the economies of scale and cost savings that come with sharing this tech across product lines. Not to mention with computer aided design, crash-testing, etc the cost of these enhancements is much less than it was previously.

All of that aside: I think people get upset when they are paying $36k for a vehicle and they have issues with it or when other "base" model vehicles have exponentially more features. A base model civic has TRD-esque level of tech and features. It's perceived value, and I think customers bristle at the notion that they didn't include basic things like gascap holders, automatic headlights, a keysensing door handle on the passenger side (which corollas have), adjustable seats, etc.

"Table stakes" and relative features are both irrelevant because that was the same story in 1998. So if you're arguing the Tacoma should be cheaper now because of economies of scale then the 1998 Tacoma should ALSO have been cheaper and we're right back to my original argument: you get more for your $ today than you did back then, or ever for that matter.

I think people just have boring lives so they occupy their minds with meaningless shit to complain about.... that also hasn't changed since 98 :D

All - My truck is getting its 30K service today and the dealer just called to say my trucks diff wasn’t leaking. I’m shocked, as I showed my service manager this picture when I dropped it off this morning. I just sent the same photo to their service manage, so I hope this gets resolved without having to file a complaint with Toyota. I also have a weird noise coming from the front as if something is loose. I’m guessing it’s a body mount issue that's listed in this post (https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...at-noise-may-not-be-your-leaf-springs.464993/).

I work for the state and we haven't even had our step raises let alone cost of living for the past two years. And when we used to get cost of living it was under 2% and it would be negated for healthcare cost, pension, taxes and everything else. We would be lucky to walk away with an extra 20 bucks a check every two weeks.

Totally off subject, but here it goes.2013 peterbilt,Big Truck.Paccar. DEF system.ALMOST went broke the first year.Stranded on the side of the road×forgot to count. Had Tow-truck on speed dial.Throwing part after part at it (warranty ),still lost business. No one wants to even take it as a trade-in,(unless you give it away)because of the reliability issues.Still having issues.Seeping or leaking rear end,big deal.Squeaky springs,whatever...Toyota does a hell of a better job handling their MOSTLY trivial issues for their 40000$vehicle,then Peterbilt for their 163000$vehicle

My dealer just called back. It's going to be covered under the recall. He went on to say my truck is the second one in their shop with this issue. Thank god I took a picture last night, as I knew it was going to rain today.

Absolutely agree, which was my unstated point. What people whine about here on TW is not what the larger market cares about. So TW folks may think things are "worse" when they are just "different". One big difference is that in the late 80s and early 90s people bought a pickup truck because they needed a truck. That is much less true these days - especially of the mid-size segment.

Show me where and by what "legal" statue they have the authority to confiscate or seize your property without a legal document without your consent and I'll tell you what brand tequila I'm high on.

Moreover, finance 101, If you finance you will pay interest or forgo a discount of some sort plus depreciation we all have to take. But the easy in which I can just go sell my vehicle NOW or just trade it in having it paid for is priceless!
    But to each their own.

Have a nice Cinco de Mayo amigo and chill!
    Cheers!

Just picked up my leaking 2017 OFFROAD From the dealer. They will have to check with Toyota for the fix. They did add 1/2 quart Trans fluid and update Trans shifting software. Mine is 3 or 4 small spots around the diff.

If you dont mind me asking (I just picked up a 17 OR DCSB as well), is the low trans fluid and Trans shift update a TSB for those models? Or do I just go in and tell them to top off the Trans fluid and do the shift update while they are at it?

I asked them to check the trans fluid level as I heard a lot were coming from the factory low on fluid and it was time for my 5000 mile service anyway. I asked if they could check on the shifting software update as mine downshifts 1 or 2 gears at each small overpass when I have cruise control set.

My truck was not on the list, regardless I had the dealer check it out to confirm. Fortunately no leaks or issues.

2016 OR. NOT on the recall. Just got mine back from the dealer. Dropped it off at 8:45 AM. 3:10 I get an update that they're still looking at my truck and waiting to find out from Toyota engineers how to proceed. 4:00 I get a call that the engineers decided that all is needed is a re-torque, and I can pick up the truck after 4:30. When I arrived to pick up the truck, the service advisor stated that the engineers called him back, and decided to have the service advisor order a gasket, and replace it once it comes in (ETA still unknown). For now, they re-torqued, and told me to keep an eye on it if it gets progressively worse before the gasket arrives. I asked the service advisor if it was a simple issue of not having them torqued properly from the factory, and he stated the engineers really aren't giving the dealers much information to go off of. Sounds like there's at least a run of OR trucks that were affected, possibly from mis-calibrated impact-wrenches, but that's all he could go off. For now, that's all I know! We'll see if they in fact do recall the ORs at some point. Either way, mine supposedly is the first rear-diff leak they've seen, out of ALL models. I'll update again, once the gasket gets replaced.
