just bought my truck this past Saturday and it didn't come with an alarm system. Is the Toyota after-market alarm, as sold by the dealer, worth the price?

I'm hesitant in getting an aftermarket alarm installed by someone else other than Toyota because on my last car, a BMW, I had major headaches with an aftermarket alarm being installed and acting all screwy. I had it installed at a reputable place that does aftermarket installs for local dealerships and they were recommended to me by one of the BMW service advisors from a local BMW dealership near me. However a month after the install, the alarm would go off at all hours of the day and night for no reason.

    appreciate opinions. Thanks.

The truck has the chipped key, so im happy with just that. no one can start the truck without the chipped key.
What i did was have the dealer install the compustar starter instead. They hard wire in a key bypass so the starter can start the truck without the chipped key, not the old hide the spare key in dash trick. but even with the starter, the chipped key has to be inserted or the truck will shut off once the brake is applied.
the only thing a alarm will do is sound a alarm that no one pays attention to anymore.
plus with the starter, all the doors unlock with one push of the key fob.

So I guess the only solution that makes sense is the remote starter w/o the alarm. Is this costly and does the dealer have factory inserts?

Dealer just contacted me and stated that Toyota does not have remote Starter for 2013. She offered the aftermarket item @ $299.00 installed.

The "dealer" alarm is not installed by the dealer. They just contract it out to a local shop and then take their cut. They'll charge you more than if you'd walked into the same shop and had it done yourself. The beemer issue was probably due to either sensitive shock sensors or beemer electrics.

To answer your initial question. No. Find your own alarm/installer.

You can also order a Toyota alarm which is all plug and play and you can install it yourself if you have basic tools

    Called a Toyota RS200
    Part # PT398-35121

So does the Toyota warranty stay in tact even if I buy the remote starter outside of the dealer?

My suggestion... Compustar. I have a Compustar installed in my 2012 Tacoma and a Clifford (Directed Electronics) in my 2008 Mustang. If I had the extra cash I'd likely replace the Clifford unit with another Compustar.
