You sure? They're about $1200 per cat OEM, and that's just for the part.

But don't misinterpret me to say people should buy skids just to prevent cat theft. That's asinine. It's just a little fringe benefit if you're picking up some skid plates to...use as skid plates.

Concord, CA did theirs a while back. But that was in conjunction with the local Police Dept who paid for part of it.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/no...98-attn-concord-ca-tacoma-4runner-owners.html

What ended up happening was the cats were engraved with my license plate number and there were two little dots of metal put next to the bolts on either side so that they cannot turn.

Our area has been hit repeatedly by catalytic converter thieves. Takes them about 2 minutes to cut the pipe and take it. They get about $40 bucks for the recycle metals and you get to spend more than $1K to replace it. They will go through a neighborhood at night and take 10-15 at a time then disappear. They are doing it right in the driveways. It is a nasty theft because they are really hurting people that cannot afford to fix the damage all for $40 or $50 bucks. Our legislators could stop it immediately by requiring recyclers to prove the origin of what they are recycling but don't count on them doing anything soon. They don't want to hurt their election chances by appearing anti-green.

From what I understand, at least in my area of NorCal, the recyclers have to take info on the person who is turning them in now. That is why they engraved the number on the cats So that they can contact me to ask me if they were stolen or simply a result of and exhaust change.

So in a world where some cats have these markings and some don't, how is this gonna help?

Thieves will just cut it off, grind it down, whatever. Or worry about which kind they got back at the crib after they've hacked it out of your truck. It may help get a conviction if they happen to catch 'em with a marked cat but that won't stop 'em from doin' the deed.

there were over 100 cats stolen from my dealerships storage lot over night recently. they were all from a fleet of E-150's.

marking or even welding the flanges to the cat converter won't help to deter the thieves..well maybe the average ones it will deter. those that truely know how to do it will cut it off in less then a minute and a half using a battery operated reciprocating saw (sawsall). and they will know where to take them regardless if they are marked or not.

They are using saw-z-all from what I've heard. Happened to an old customer of mine in his parking lot at work. Camera caught them doing it, very quick.

Damn that sucks. I would just get the skid, but I also need to move the exhaust and save the money. Maybe if I wire it to the battery......

I used to live in a crap hole town, so my 98 4Runner got it's cat stolen. Middle of the day, at work. Not the only Toyota in the lot that was hit, either. Ironically I worked for a catalytic converter manufacturer and we had $8MM worth of catalyst in the warehouse behind the truck...

There were something like 20 - 30 stolen cats/day reported to the police back then, and they estimate that only 10% of people file a police report.

It wasn't as straight as the picture makes it look. I'm sure the asshat was wild on meth and laughing maniacally the whole time. All that makes it hard to cut straight.

Plus, he cut out like 26" of total exhaust or something like that for a 14" long cat... Took my rear O2 sensor, too.
