Ok, sorry yesterday was a busy day at work and I wasn't able to get back to this.

But I went to my dealer - Woburn Toyota - they scanned the car. It was pretty painless, and if not for them needing to get a car into the work room, I would have likely been out in 5-10 minutes.

Woburn has one of those 3 lane service center drop off areas. They dedicated their far right lane for these scans. It appears they were scanning both Tacomas and Tundras. The setup was pretty basic, mat on the floor with a light, given the box appears to be UV, computer on the side and some other cameras along the edge.

EDIT - not UV, that just stand for UNDER VEHICLE INSPECTION - https://www.uviscan.com/products/uvi-scan-rd

Here is a closeup of the gear

When I got there there was 1 truck in line, but they needed to get that other vehicle through that door on the right, so they drove me through and around. I ended up being number 6 or so.

The scan was pretty simple, drive up, the light comes on, they drive your car across, all good.

    Here's mine going through it:

    And the results (full size)

Like I said some Tundras went through too

Basically looks like a quick scan to get details of frame condition. I'm sure they were doing a wide range of ages etc to see the comparisons.

They said they would email the gift card to me, has not yet arrived. I will post when that does.

Also, because this was "something" I logged this in my maintenance log:

I’m happy that after only 28 years of rusty Tacoma frames they are finally going to look into why this keeps happening.

Wow, that's awesome. Thanks for all the details. I guess Toyota can't afford another frame issue. We'll see what happens though.

I'm in New Hampshire and haven't heard anything like this.. Being a 2017, frame looks good. I was under the truck this week due to the fact I had a rattle. The screws for cat shield rotted, but two stainless zip ties and a hose clamp fix er up.

They know exactly why it keeps happening. The frame is layered in areas and rusts kinda from the inside. They also coat it poorly, among other things.

this scan is just to make sure Toyotas duct tape and bubble gum solutions to this rust problem on a frame that’s essentially unchanged since 2005 are holding up.

Those solutions where, if I recall: plastic caps/deflectors where frame changes from C-channel to boxed, a few other plastic caps and plugs here and there, and mystery grease schmoo they rub along the seams in the frame. Maybe a slightly better coating.

If the low-to-zero effort attempts at rust mitigation they did where successful, this scan will show it. They are testing the waters to see if they are going to have to recall our trucks for dissolving underneath us in the next few years.

just my opinion. Seems obvious. Hope I’m wrong. Where’s that engineer fellow I like his input on stuff like this. his username escapes me at the moment….

I just received a call from dealer asking to do the same. Said it would take two hours and they would pay $100. I obviously asked why and they said to make sure there's no rust and its for research.

Just curious: what can one do to protect the frame?
I'm in a mild climate, where rain is the worst that happens.
No salt or other de-icing chemicals are used here.

Fluid Film or Woolwax seems the best method. I get mine Woolwaxed yearly since Toyota replaced the frame due to rot (never did on the original frame).

I happened to read this thread at lunch time today. I bought my truck at Woburn Toyota about a month ago.

This afternoon they called me and want to scan the frame on October 18. Say it takes 2 hours, also.

I won't be going because I live 3 hours away. I would if I was closer just to find out more.... Like how come it was 15 minutes the first time and now it's 2 hours ? Seems to me like they are trying to figure out how to do an effective scan.
