Thanks! I do have one question for you or anybody watching this thread for that matter. After removing the rust from the frame, I have pitting that has occured in the metal due to the rust.

Would you use a body filler putty to eliminate the pits or would you just paint it and be done with it?

I know that after priming and painting it alot of the pitting will be filled in to a certain degree, but I do believe you will still be able to see the pits.

Note the red arrows in the pic below. There is heavy pitting along the top of the frame and on the sides where the frame was welded together originally. Its a crappy pic but the lighter shades of red on the side of the frame are areas of pitting.

 

Fun project...I wouldn't worry about pitting....you stopped the rust

I myself wouldn't worry at all about the pitting. But then again if your after a full make over I would try and make it look as clean as possible. You might want or have to sell it in the future, just saying, and you'll get more for her.

I'll use filler on the really bad spots and paint and go on the minor areas.

Picked this up today. I'm not so sure the dust mask I have been wearing is providing me enough protection. Better safe than sorry.

 

Awesome thread. Only issue I have so far is.. Why the hell are there mud tires on your trailer? Why not just put a set of trailer tires on it?

 

Normally an offroad capable trailer has the same wheel tire setup as the prime mover so that they can be swapped out in case of flats.

 

I thought about that before I posted, but it still doesn't make that much sense. You are getting unnnecessary wear on the tire tread. Even then when you have a flat, you'll still be down one tire.

 

For the pitting, you could use a couple coats of filler primer then wet sand back down to smooth it all out.

True but you could still drag the trailer out and ditch it if required to escape to safety. And it looks kickass.

 

Two reasons for me. I only carry one spare that matches both my truck and trailer. The second would be for looks. I only use mine 3-4 times a year so wear and tear isn't a big problem for me. The tires that are on mine are my old tires that I had on my truck. As I replace tires on the truck the two best from the old go on trailer. I have yet to purchase tires just for the trailer. Trailer tires would be best but I hope I never have more than 1300-1500# on the trailer.

 

I found a site the other day that had grease caps for cheap. When I get to work in the morning I'll see if I can find it. I think I saved it to my favorites....pretty sure I did.

 

That would be great. I've been looking for ever and can't find one anyplace.

 

Check this site out. They refer to it as a hubcap. $5.00 per. Not too bad. I haven't personally ordered anything from them as of yet.
I'm not sure what the difference is in the two parts they have listed.
