I emailed Toyota and asked them why they haven't introduced a diesel Tacoma or a Hi Lux in the US....and if they were planning to. The first response I got was very short and did not address the question of "IF" and/or "WHEN". When I wrote back and asked them to address the unanswered question, this is the response I got! Talk about blowing smoke!
What do you guys think of the response?

"Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A, Inc., and I apologize for your dissatisfaction with our previous reply, as it is not intended.

Please know that your feedback is greatly appreciated, and we appreciate your sincerity about the need for Toyota to address our times with the right vehicles!

We're glad to get your feedback because the only way we know what our customers are looking for is when they tell us, as you have.

Generally, product decisions are based on customer research.

We try to scope our customers out in advance, by researching the market, conducting interviews, surveys, focus groups and doing our homework, but there's no better source than a Toyota owner or intender who takes the time to tell us like it is.

We can't guarantee that a model like you suggest would be made, but if it were, it would be driven by just this sort of honest communication.

Your comments have been made available to Toyota management.

In general, Toyota does not provide information about future products or product planning stages until either a new vehicle is available at the dealership or until Toyota makes a public announcement. This helps prevent a situation in which the public can become frustrated by hearing about something that they cannot go see at their Toyota dealership, and it helps prevent a situation in which a Toyota dealership is blind-sided by information about which they have not been briefed in advance. To this end, Toyota coordinates the timing of its product announcements.

In addition, Toyota does not release internal information that has not been made public, because the information is proprietary until such time as it is made public by Toyota. This practice is standard throughout the industry, as it not only prevents frustration at the public and dealership level, but it also helps keep information secret that would be of value to potential competitors.

Automotive publications may publish information from any source, but the information officially released by Toyota is timed according to the above guidelines for the above reasons.

To receive information as it becomes available, please sign up for Toyota information at https://access.toyota.com/

We are committed to manufacturing high quality vehicles that exemplify innovative design, styling, dependability and durability. In an effort to maintain the quality that is evident in our previous vehicle models, we continue to pay close attention to the detail in our future models.

Again, thank you for your interest, and for taking the time and trouble to write us and share your thoughtful feedback!

    Sincerely,

    James Fewel

Actually yes!.....I was hoping for an honest answer and they never did really answer why they haven't introduced one here.....and....I do understand the diesel emissions requirements...and the added cost to the company....but ya just never know until ya ask.....

Legally, I don't believe they can tell you anything about any futures that they haven't already announced publically. I work in the software business and we have the same issues and can't talk about any future enhancements unless someone has signed a non-disclosure or they've already been announced publicly.

Not to be an ass but why would you think they'd give you inside information that they haven't officially released to the rest of the world, just because you said please? They're a very large company, they could care less that some guy in CT wants to know if and when they'll provide a diesel in the states. They're response is, if we make one available, then you can go buy it, until then what you see is what you get.

This is the key. All business is secretive in future endeavors. That why they put the covers over new vehicles they are still testing. If they let all the data on what their future market expansion is then all the other companies will know. If they were making a diesel Tacoma ( which I doubt they are) if they could release it before all the other companies knew about it they would have at least a whole year of advertisement, PR and sales than all the other companies.

If/when they decide to make a diesel they will tell us.

If everyone in the forum sends them an email the response might be more measured rather than generic. It also might send a message to Toyota that their most loyal customers want a diesel.

It's not just about secrecy and business competition. The big issue is stocks and things like insider trading, or someone making business decisions based on futures that don't end up happening. That's where the legal issues come in.

You are foolish as a 3.0D4D Toyota diesel in a Tacoma 4x4 crew cab gets 32 miles per gallon highway and 28 city. The Tacoma 4.0 V6 gasser gets 16 city 19 highway. The diesel gets you over a 50% fuel economy increase while making more torque and horsepower and if maintained well 500,000 lifespan. Properly set up a diesel will run on filtered veggie oil, drain oil, auto transmission fluid etc. I am having a dieselyoyz swap on my Tacoma
